Man, is this game tough or what? The fairly sparse save points mean that I keep dying after a considerable amount of playing.

Any tips?

Well, R6V is really meant for you to use their cover system. A lot. All the time. Secondly, they give you two AI teammates who can be ordered ahead of you and who do a better job of breaching rooms than you typically do by yourself. Depending on your skill, they might also be better at spotting enemies, so rely on your team to draw enemy fire. There are hardly any times at all where you'll need to have them on "return fire only" - that setting basically just allows you some less-lethal room clearing options for the handful of times you're rescuing hostages.

Use the snake cam before entering rooms. The enemy reflexes vary a bit depending on how you approach them. If you just run through a doorway and they're waiting for you, you die. If you can get them to come through a doorway or around a sharp corner, they have to kinda stop and find you again, and in that moment you can blast them.

Smoke grenades are wonderful if you just can't get through a section. Pop smoke and then flip over to thermal. It's a shooting gallery from that point, just make sure you don't accidentally walk out of the smoke while you're casually headshotting tangos. :)

If there's a specific part you're stuck on, post it here and maybe I could offer more specific advice.

I suddenly realised I should have said where I'm up to. I'm at the end of the first level (I think it's the end anyway) where I have none of that useful stuff you just mentioned. My crew have been captured and I've got a pistol and (soon into the checkpoint) a shotgun.

I keep getting stuck at a part when you go down a big tunnel and into a larger room. There's a guy across and to the left of the entrance, a guy just to the left of the entrance and then two guys to the right. I can get the first two and then one of the second two keeps getting me. The fact that it uses checkpoints, meaning I have to start from the beginning each time, is giving me the shits.

I've stopped using the shotty - it takes too long to fire. The first few terrorists are relatively easy because they empty their shotguns and then you get a chance to cap them when they're reloading. But this big room is hurting cos there's always one of those two who's waiting. Smoke grenades would be a good way to get a cross the room into a better position, or my crew could draw fire, but I ain't got either of those. So any advice would be good.

which version 360 or the pc version, in the pc version the key is to aim the shotgun and keep the presure on, you will get submachine guns later on in that level
.
the trick is to use the cover and wait till they make the mistake, lure them out , its a case of hunter and prey, is this room the one after you find the room where the two were held, the key is to always hold the high ground, and protect your head, you can take several body shots, a head shot is a hole in one.

take your time and dont rush

Playing the 360 version.

I've done lots of waiting, but they never seem to move from their positions.

I seem to recall the enemies not moving much in the PC version as well. You're in some tunnels and the passageway splits right? I may have in the end just moved steadily through them, or rush through, I can't recall.

Try varying your tactics, and repeating tactics that didn't seem to work before, till you get something that works.

"Leroy Jenkins mode" (run screaming while firing wildly) may be an alternative here. Seriously. Sometimes the AI doesn't really know what to make of that and you can use your Halo reflexes on the bad guys while you thin their numbers. :)

one thing is the sniper rifle is your friend through out the game, even indoors( casinos have huge rooms), great for taking out machine guns with a long line of sight. as to tactics the enemy does react to supressive fire and will stay ducked for 3 to 4 secondsafter you tag them with a burst of fire. in the tunnels on a replay i tag the two guys on each side of the room then run on the flank of one, drop him, then duck to cover , tag the other guy, then flank and drop him .( side note there are a few female mercs and you hear the guys scream , " you killed her" mostly in dantes) also listen for the various conversations that the mercs engage in when you snake cam them, :D all im saying is "penguins".

also look at the map for a good fortress position that allows you to see the whole area and duck for cover, not sure about the 360 version but keep the cover button press( right mouse) at all time near crates, low walks etc.i like this raindow six alot due to the slow and steady nature of the game.

also dont bother with the gun emplacements, they jump around like a kicking donkey and you are exposed, that and keep that sound supressor on the AI can lose its bears on you even in a big fire fight.

Thanks for the advice guys. I used the shot gun to clear out the bits of the room I wasn't getting a good bead on and the pistol for the rest. I had to run in to get their attention a couple of times. I'm in the final bit now, heading towards the outside and I'm enjoying all the duck and cover stuff.

Ah, I know exactly where you are now. I also avoid the mounted weapons, except for this exact part inside that warehouse with the scaffolding and the ladders. Part of it was that I hadn't realized I could change the brightness, so I was reduced to unloading 30-40 rounds in the general direction of muzzleflashes.

Slow and steady, defcombeta is right. Not that you have a choice in your current mission, but I always take an ACOG scope. It doesn't focus your field of view like a more powerful scope, so you can tell when people are trying to flank you.

I realize now that a lot of the "lure them out" advice is mainly appropriate for Terrorist Hunt mode, where the tangos will chase you through the entire level sometimes. In campaign the enemies will move around a little, but generally there are few times where you can pull back and expect them to follow you.

I hoped on the machine gun in here and got shot to hell. So I avoided it and got through pretty quickly. I also started suing the scopes, which are cool fun. Once I'd cleared out the tangos I spent at least 5 minutes creeping around looking for other people - the game had me convinced it was about to jump me!

I'm now into the casino level and I've gotten inside. It kind of annoys me how you can't jump over things (like all the trucks blocking the entrance) but it makes for more interesting levels I guess.

My next question is about weapon choice. Is there a reason to take a weapon with out a scope or expanded magazine or similar? And what weapons do people take? I've taking an assault rifle and a submachine gun (I can't remember which types and can't seem to find a list of the game's weapons with pictures online) with smoke and frag grenades. Is that pretty standard kit?

The great thing about R6 (IMO) is that weapon choices are both significant enough to make a difference between classes of weapons, but not so nuanced that you can't just take whatever you like the look of or the sound of.

On campaign, I take an assault rifle + ACOG. The exact type depends on whether I know what the bad guys are carrying or not, so I can get more ammo off of their drops. I like the M8, because it sounds awesome on semiautomatic, the SCAR-H because of a game I'm running, and the MTAR because it fires almost as fast as the MAC-11.

My secondary weapon typically is either a Mk. 46 with recoil control (because it fires fast and is really loud), an MG36 (with any scope besides the iron sights, God I hate those things), or some sort of submachinegun. The P90 should have plenty of enemy ammo drops, but I can't stand its default sights so I'll normally just go with the MP-5. Sometimes the MP9, for Gordon Freeman action. :)

In multiplayer, I'll sometimes take the AUG A3 because Karl from Die Hard approved of it. :)
