View Full Version : Give me a feat for the Fighter/Cleric [D&D 3]

I'm playing a human Fighter/Cleric. The theme of this character is that he's from a sect that believes their calling in life is to destroy as many undead as possible. (You see the use of necromancy is the root of all evil in the world. Releasing undead from their torment is the best way to combat evil.)
Right now he's C5/F3. I started him out thinking that Fighter would be the primary class. But as things have moved along, I like him better as a cleric. When I level next, I'll become C5/F4. But that will probably be my last ever fighter level.
When I level, I'll gain 2 feats. One for becoming a 9th level character, plus the F4 bonus feat.
I'm going to take Practised Spellcaster as one of them. That will allow me to cast the spells I have as if I was level 9.
But I'm not finding another one that I really like. Perhaps someone knows of one from a splat book that would be a good fit.
Here's what he already has. I'll admit that some of these are odd choices, but they seemed like good ideas at the time.
Feats:
C1- (human,L1) Extra Turning, Expertise
F1- (bonus feat) Improved Disarm
C2- (L3) Weapon Focus (mace)
F2- (bonus feat) Dodge
F3 – (L6) Lightning Reflexes

Extra turning or the divine feats like divine might or divine vigor are obvious choices. Where are you going with the character? At this point, you might want to look at feats that qualify you for various prestige classes like sacred exorcist (okay, bad example; sacred exorcist doesn't have any feat prerequisites though it is a perfect fit for an anti-undead character), radiant servant of pelor, contemplative, hunter of the dead, or even the prestige paladin from UA.
You'd be more effective staying a fighter with some ancillary cleric buffs than going straight cleric at this point. Being stuck casting 3rd-level spells when all the other primary casters are casting 5th-level spells can make you feel ineffective, depending on the campaign you're in (I believe the rebuild rules from PHII can turn some of those fighter levels into cleric levels, with the DM's approval).
Edit: The title of the thread says [D&D 3]... is that 3.0 or 3.5?

Turning in general is a very DM specific thing. Some campaigns have hordes of low HD skeletons that you can *poof* with a Turning check very easily. Others have powerful undead with many HD and Turn Resistance making them functionally impossible to affect with a Turning Check.
If you run into lots of low HD undead I suggest some of the feats that improve your turning, if you run into lots of undead that are difficult/impossible to Turn or you're not running into many undead in your campaign I echo the suggestion of picking up some of the divine feats that convert your Turn attempts to other bonuses.

3.0, sort of. Our group switched over from 1st Edition to 3rd while Wizards was switching from 3 to 3.5. We all play from the 3.0 PHB, but we're open to incorporating 3.5 rules. It's a little clunky, but we generally make it work.
Thanks for pointing out Radiant Servant of Pelor. I think I may go in that direction.
I think what I may do is take my Fighter level, as I planned, with the 2 feats being Practised Spellcaster and Reach Spell. Then plan to add only levels of RSoP from then on.

Possible problem: One of the feats you take has to be a valid fighter bonus feat. I'll admit I'm not actually familiar with either Practiced Spellcaster or Reach Spell (haven't bought any supplements in ages), but just going by their names I'm not sure either qualifies.

Weapon specialization is pretty much the only thing worth taking since you already have weapon focus, and you must take a fighter bonus feat.

Power Attack. Use your cleric spells to boost your attack bonus, then use it to do loads of damage. It's a Fighter bonus feat, too.
I was going to post more, questioning what books you had and what options you had available to you. But I think even if you have a bunch of supplements available you probably want Power Attack and the largest mace you can find.
