Capcom blames the retailers.

What I want to know is what the hell? That's lame. Why retailers feel like they can get away with that? Will they get away with it? Are retailers going to try that stunt here?

I mean, c'mon... sheesh.

Unless "the process" involves retailers needing to cover higher shipping costs on the PS3 version for some reason, that's some weak-ass shit right there. Not that it affects me personally, but still.

Could it have something to do with the PS3's dwindling popularity? Maybe they need to sell more copies of the game to make a profit?

Maybe they perceive a weakness in the release schedule and are gouging accordingly? I mean, everybody and their mother will be selling MGS4, so no chance to overcharge there - too much competition? Its not like DMC4 and MGS4 are the same type of game. Or maybe they think the guys who will buy it (hardcore gamers) will be more likely to buy it anyhow? Maybe they think the PS3 version will be the preferred version? I don't know... Annoying they're "taxing" the PS3 version like that.

It's the retailers in the UK screwing up the pricing.

I've checked Amazon.com, Amazon.ca, Futureshop.ca and Bestbuy.com and the price is identical on both platforms, with the Ltd. edition being $20 (roughly £10) more. If you look at Amazon.co.uk, you'll notice that they've listed (for both platforms) the Ltd. and standard editions at the same price. Ergo, they fucked up the pricing of the different skus.

Um, no. In fact, with the sale of the 40GB model, sales have been picking up steadily. According to what I've read, from October 2007 to November 2007, sales of the PlayStation 3 went up by 285% in the United States. As of January 1, 2008, the PlayStation 3 has sold 3.25 million units in the US and 155,000 units in Australia.

I don't know about that. Capcom is just gouging PAL markets, that's all. Luckily the console is region free, so I'd be buying the U.S. version from amazon.

Did you compare the links? It's pretty obvious.

No I didn't. I just read another article the other day where Capcom responded to the higher PS3 price in europe that this was deliberate and part of their business model.

Now why Capcom feels the need to charge more for the PS3 version in Europe (which I imagine will flow onto Australia) I don't understand. Its certainly not due to PS3 weakness, as the PS3 is stronger in Europe than anywhere else.

Hmm. Only a few days ago they said this was deliberate and part of their business model. Guess they don't want to take the heat for their decision.

Linky? And why would they do that, anyhow? Weird.

I'll try and dig it out. I think it came via kotaku.

EDIT: Here we go (http://ps3.qj.net/Capcom-Difference-in-PAL-prices-of-DMC-4-builds-due-to-our-business-model/pg/49/aid/112539). Doesn't make much sense that their model could enable discounting only in Europe.

What I find suspicious in all the articles is that they quote a source they don't name. An anonymous spokesperson from Capcom isn't particularly confidence inspiring, but this is videogame 'journalism' after all.

Interesting, but I'll wait for Next-Gen or some other site to confirm that first...
