First one's very nice. You've almost managed to disguise that it's a render there, which isn't easy to do. Second one is good enough, not sure I like the overlapping flame effect on the wheels but it works. Third one I'm just not sure about for some reason, but since I can't place my finger on why I don't like it, you can pretty much discount that criticism as personal taste.

Thanks, Ash! Much appreciated.

Yeah, the third one is a work in progress, so it will have more work done to it. Did you see the full figure version of it on the website?

Cheers,

I love the font you've used on 'Quest' - wouldn't care to share the name of it, would you? It might come in useful sometime.

Heh! Thanks Jon!

Yep, no probs. The 'Q' is hand drawn, so I can't help you there! ;) The lower case letters have been altered a little, but they were based on Blackletter HPLHS, by the brilliant Andrew Leman. Even better, though, it's free, as are a bunch of his fonts, at:

Woo!

Thanks guys,

You do good work.

I love the Balrog Biker image, you should make a shirt on printfection or zazzle and sell that if you own that image, I think it's sharp. :)

Thanks Dave!

As it happens, the Balrog Biker is already on shirts, and patches, and cups n stuff, I think. It's the mascot for a local biker club.

I've always liked your work a lot. When I get nearer to publishing my shit, you'll be the first fella on my list to contact about logo designs and webby stuff.

Can you tell us a little bit about the programs you use? I'm a Photoshop 7 and CS2 user and someday I'd like to dig into Illustrator.

Cheers!

Excellent! :D Bring it on!

Can you tell us a little bit about the programs you use? I'm a Photoshop 7 and CS2 user and someday I'd like to dig into Illustrator.

Sure. Almost everything I work on has a pen/pencil-and-paper origin to it - just really rough stuff. I've started to do some of that in Photoshop CS3 or Painter X and a tablet, but more often than not initial ideas are just a scribble in a notepad or whatever else is to hand. After that, it depends on what kind of work it is. Illustrator (again CS3) first to work up initial letterforms or layouts for logos and websites, print work, and so on. I'm very comfortable in Illustrator pushing beziers around. Photoshop straight away for more illustrative stuff.

After that, again depending on the project, dipping in and out of Photoshop, Painter. Textures from all over the place (including, the other day, in a moment of strange inspiration, photographing the road surface just outside my place when I realised it was exactly the texture I was looking for. I don't know what the neighbours made of that). I'll also use 3DS Max, Poser and Bryce for bits and pieces too.

If the project is about flat graphics, it usually ends with Illustrator. If it's layout, InDesign (used to be a Quark devotee, but their pricing policies pretty much did for me in the end - and I must say I prefer InDesign nowadays). Most everything else gets finalised in Photoshop. A nice big wacom is a must. I've got a clunky old A3 one that is ace.

Been having some fun with Art Rage for laying down colour recently, after Jon H mentioned it in a thread here, but still typically turning to Painter for stuff like that.

Wow. What a ramble! Heh. If you've got any specific questions, I'm always happy to help out. I think most people are most comfortable with whatever they learned to use first, and I've been with Illustrator and Photoshop since - ooh god, about 1989?

Now I'm showing my age. ;)

Hi Quire,

For some reason, I couldn't see anything on the first page here but I liked what you did with the cards and logo. The last one was pretty good but the background seemed to mute the colors of the pattern INHO.

Anyway, good luck.

Ah, thanks Sean. Yeah, just realised all the earlier posts point to old - now defunct - webspace. All of it is up on my current site, though. Guess I'll start a new thread next time I do some updates, so as not to confuse matters!

Thanks for your comments on the last batch! Always appreciated.

Many thanks to JonA for fixing all of the image links that pointed to older webspace in the first few posts in this thread.

You're a star, Jon!

It's that time again... :D

First up, something that some of you will have seen before:

http://www.tesseractengine.com/quire/MEDIA/Nebuleon_460px.jpg

Graphic design development for HiterWelt's 2nd Ed. Nebuleon RPG.

Some digital painting:

http://www.tesseractengine.com/quire/MEDIA/guardianOfWyrmdarst_460px.jpg

JonH mentioned ArtRage on these very boards, so I picked up a copy of it. This is the result of having a play in it - but I should point out I 'jumped ship' to PhotoShop to get it to this point!

That map's back. Again:

http://www.tesseractengine.com/quire/MEDIA/RounMap_012_460px.jpg

Now in FULL RGB COLOUR!

Finally - a character sheet:

http://www.tesseractengine.com/quire/MEDIA/TBz_characterSheet_460px.jpg

I entered a character sheet compo, and won! Woo-hoo!

More details and bigger (in the case of the map MUCH MUCH bigger) versions are up on my website (http://www.tesseractengine.com/quire/).

Comments are as welcome as ever!

Cheers for now,

I usually wait until I've got three or four pieces to add before I post an update, but I'm particularly chuffed with this one:

http://www.tesseractengine.com/quire/MEDIA/DragonWarriorsLogo_460px.jpg

The logo for the new edition of Dragon Warriors, out in October from Magnum Opus Press (http://www.magnumopuspress.com/).

A very gratifying project: James Wallis is a pleasure to work with; this will adorn this very forum's own Jon Hodgson (http://www.jonhodgson.com/)'s brilliant cover (and a single line version the supplements); and the original Dragon Warriors is my fav ever RPG as a player. I've some real fond memories of when my little bro used to run it for our group.

As ever, there's a bigger version for those that like to scrutinise the pixels up on my website. (http://www.tesseractengine.com/quire/)

Cheers all!

I missed this thread before, so I'd like to take the opportunity now to say that Quire is a consummate professional and delightful to work with. He did a stellar job on my PSI Storm game, as you can see by the beautiful cards. Can't recommend him enough.

Thanks Ryan! I'm looking forward to when the game comes out.

A quick note: Ryan is an accomplished fencer, and can cast a very keen observational eye over any figure-work you're doing! Thanks for that too!

Hey All,

Here's some recent gaming-related graphics work wot I did do:

http://www.tesseractengine.com/quire/MEDIA/OMEGA_grid_460px.jpg

That's a character sheet for Magnamammoth's futuristic supers game, OMEGA. The full version's a PDF.

http://www.tesseractengine.com/quire/MEDIA/SLG_corporate.gif

Colossus's Sun Love Games has a new logo! There's a display version of this, too.

http://www.tesseractengine.com/quire/MEDIA/cynosure_logo_460px.jpg

Logo for Tesseract Engine's forthcoming SF RPG.

Bigger versions, etc, are up on my website (http://www.tesseractengine.com/quire/).

Comments are as welcome as ever! Also...if you're in the US, the Dollar to Sterling exchange rate is working well for me! Prices from around $60, for logos, character sheets, layout templates, font customization...you get the idea. :)

Cheers for now!

Adam Crossingham of Sixtystone Press recently commissioned me to design their company logo. We ended up with two variants. The first, to be used for one-colour applications, needed to look like an engraved picture from an old book. The second version was to be more illustrative, for full-colour uses.

Here they are:

http://www.tesseractengine.com/quire/MEDIA/SixtystonePress_OneColour_460px.gif

http://www.tesseractengine.com/quire/MEDIA/SixtystonePress_FullColour_460px.jpg

This was a really cool project, with distinct aims that I think were fulfilled pretty well - even if I do say so myself! :D What do you guys think?

As ever, bigger versions are up on my website (http://www.tesseractengine.com/quire/).

Cheers all!

No idea why, it kinda reminds me of Atari's logo and an old PSone game called Syndicate Wars (I loved that game) :)

Quire

Thanks Scott!

Yeah, I can definitely see the Atari thing. Atari kind of has 'towers' too, doesn't it?

The Syndicate Wars thing is really intriguing. I loved the game too (although I think IIRC I got more play out of Syndicate rather than Syndicate Wars). And Cynosure is a dystopian SF setting... Hmm!

Evil Robot Games (http://www.evilrobotgames.com) commissioned me to do the logo for their forthcoming Golden Age of Steam game. Here's the full-colour version:

Single-colour and bigger version(s) are up on my website (http://www.tesseractengine.com/quire/).

A couple of updates for everyone to check out. This time, a new logo...and a minotaur for sale. Well, a minotaur's head, anyway:

http://www.tesseractengine.com/quire/MEDIA/SK_fullColour_460px.jpg

Pretty obviously a new logo for Spellbound Kingdoms, Frank Brunner's RPG. We also have a new website in development for the game - I'll post a link once it's done.

And what's that smell? Ah yeah. This load of old bull:

Hey Senor Quire, how are you at UI design? Just musing on something...

Done a fair whack of UI (and Usability Assessment too) for my sins, Mr H. A lot of desktop and kiosk-based stuff in the late 90s, everything's web nowadays, of course.

Why ask you? Tell me more! :D
