So with C&C:Red Alert 3 announced, I'm wondering just what is the diff between regular C&C and Red Alert.
Surprising as it might seem (given my liking form RTS games), I think the only C&C game I played was the original.

as far as i know C &c red alert is the prequel to the first command and conquer. It explains a alternate history where hitler is removed from the timeline and stalin conquers europe and is then killed by cains underlings, This plot is forgotten a bit in the second game but there are hints here and there, Units like mammoth tank is a russian unit in C &C red alert and a GDI unit in the tiberium era, its the only unit that carries over. As to the different gameplay elements, better path finding, some interesting units and in the second game a big improvement in graphics and units, have to love the zepplin airships.
if you play red alert 1 now be prepared to take a big step back, since a lot of features like multi unit select on click are missing. also one of the best opening title sequences from that period of games.
you can get the whole lot of the games on one disk, along with renegade.

Red alert also never took itself very serious, this is especially true of the second installment.
People I know tend to like it or dislike it based on the quasi-silliness.
YMMV

Red Alert 2 and its expansion pack, Yuri's Revenge, are also justly famous for having really really cool units.
Also, also, as far as I know C&C and Red Alert are distinct universes that simply share some elements.
The first Red Alert game is in both universes. No one seems to know exactly how this works out.

Red Alert 1 was the prequel to Tiberian Dawn (the first one).
But then the series splits into two time lines based on who wins Red Alert 1.
If the Soviets win, you get Tiberian Dawn and the whole Tiberian war time line (Sun and Twilight)
If the allies win, you get Red Alert 2.
Command and Conquer: Generals is a third time line completely unrelated to the other two.

Ahh. OK. Sounds interesting. Red Alert 3 might be worth a look then.

Red Alert has Tanya. Which is important.

Red Alert:
"You got your Einstein in my Tesla!"
"You got your Tesla in my Einstein!"
Then both parties are killed by Kirov Airships and Devastators.

I hadn't heard about 3, but just reading the thread title made me giggle with glee.
In the office.
Luckily, no-one saw.

Basically. C&C:Red Alert is mildly pulpy, late-1940's sci-fi wargame. Zepplins that drop electro-bombs, chrono-troopers that wipe the enemy from time, badass commandos, mobile V2 rocket trucks, teslas-a-gogo, evil mind controlling villains... it's all good.

Great games lets hope the third will be as fun as fun as the last two

Serious Understatement.

Apparently they're adding a new side: The Empire of the Rising Sun.
I was curious whether China or Japan would show up- I expect that China will come along in RA4 now. Each seems tailor made for this kind of cheesy cold war game.

That's not Lincoln's head on the memorial! They've put a Stalin's head on it!
