This is a brief write up of our experiences with Hollow Earth Expedition. Now I should say at the outset that I really enjoy pulp games, and have played with most rules systems (D6, D20, SOTC, TFT, SW, TS/SI, TriStat, Unisystem etc) at one time or another, so I was keen to see how HEX worked out.

We used the Adamant Entertainment adventure Dragon Island (adapted from D20).

The two players chose the Big Game Hunter archetype (from the main rulebook) and the Daredevil Pilot archetype (complete with rocket pack) from Secrets of the Surface World. Their respective names: Major Arthur Wellesley and Rick (the rocket) Havoc...

The story started in Shanghai, where they were scheduled to meet the renowned explorer Sheldon Grey. At the hotel they met other potential travellers, including Annie Wilson (intrepid reporter) and Lee Hunter (field biologist).

Sheldon entertained them with stories of his recent trip into the Hindu Kush and persuaded them to join his expedition to find a mysterious island, allegedly inhabited by a lost tribe, as well as "dragons". His only guide was the recently discovered diary of an explorer from several centuries ago.

At this point the celebration dinner was interrupted by an attack by the thuggee cult (actually after the idol Sheldon recovered from their temple, but the characters never found that out..).

Mayhem ensued, with Rick and the Major rapidly discovering that they had excellent firearms skills, but were not so handy in a fist-fight. The fight swayed back and forth, until finally, with the aid of a couple of well-thrown dinner knives and the timely arrival of the local authorities, the thugs were driven off...

The following day, awoken early by Sheldon's efficient aide, Mr Bhakti, the group were picked up from the hotel and driven to a nearby field where Sheldon's dirigible, the Pegasus, was waiting for them. (I used interior maps of the Graf Zeppelin).

The journey took several days, and gave Rick the chance to show off his rocket pack to the rest of the crew, as well as an opportunity to try out the small biplane that the airship carried.

Eventually an island was sighted and the Pegasus reduced altitude. The biplane, out scouting, ran into the outskirts of a tropical storm and hightailed it back to base. On hearing the news, it was decided to take the Pegasus in low into the shelter of a cove, secure it by landing lines and be ready to ride out the storm if it hit. This left a few hours of daylight, so a group set off into the jungle for a quick look round.

Emerging into a clearing they were confronted by a group of natives. Lee Hunter thought they showed unusual racial characteristics and might represent descendants of mythical Lemuria. Unfortunately no-one spoke any language the natives could understand, so laborious signs had to be used. At this point the "conversation" was interrupted by a tall native in bright regalia carrying a staff. He bowed to the party and clearly indicated (in a respectful way) that they should follow him. The party did so and the rest of the natives fell in alongside like an honour guard.

At the foot of the mountains, they emerge at a native village, dominated by a large stone ziggurat with a massive stone block on top - Lee Hunter is excited again by the implications of the architecture. Here they are taken to a large hut and introduced to an overweight middle-aged native who seems to be the chief. Obeying his command to be seated, they all follow the chief's lead in drinking from a communal cup full of what tastes like hot spiced wine.

Cue realisation by the players as the party start falling unconscious all around them...

They awaken in the night, with the wind rising and rain beginning to fall, with their hands tied behind their back, and inside a large bamboo cage. Outside are two guards, and by one of the huts, a pile of their equipment - backpacks, guns, Rick's rocket pack etc.

The Major spends a style point to have a small knife in his boot that the natives have overlooked, and stealthily the party free themselves. Cutting the ropes that lash the bamboo together, they burst free. This time, by lucky rolls they swiftly take out the guards, and (seizing as much equipment as they can) flee into the bush. Except for Rick who calmly stands in the village strapping on the rocket pack as the natives rouse themselves and close in...

At the last second Rick ignites the pack, and soars into the sky over the natives' heads. Sighting the lights of the Pegasus he heads for it at cruising speed, arriving well ahead of the rest of the party. He warns the crew, who man the machine guns and turn on the ship's searchlights.

In the jungle Sheldon and the Major double back to the village - they want to spy on the natives to try to find out what's going on, and why they were captured. As dawn breaks, they see the chief, now bound hand and foot, being lead up the steps of the ziggurat, apparently in their place. The tall native now emerges in full priestly regalia and blows a loud note on a large conch shell. To their horror the note is answered from the skies above, as a huge, winged creature (a pterosaur from the HEX rule book) swoops down and messily butchers the chief before swooping back towards a cave mouth in the distant mountains, carrying his remains in its mouth (beak?).

Everyone heads back to the Pegasus which has ridden out the storm without difficulty. Sheldon is desperate to catch or kill a specimen - or no-one will believe them. The adventurers agree, and soon a small expedition is heading for the mountain as swiftly as possible, keeping a careful watch for the natives they know to be looking for them.

They arrive at a rickety rope bridge across a yawning chasm. Rick crosses first (he can fly if the bridge breaks!) but only get half way before a growl from behind alerts the party to the Smilodon that is pursuing them. Sheldon gives a great oath and rushes across the bridge, hotly followed by Lee and Annie. As the beast rushes forward the Major takes careful aim...

Using some style points to raise his dice pool the Major fires a single, devastating shot even as the creature leaps. The bullet crashes through the thing's skull, but its corpse crashes into the major. His rifle flies from his hand and he and the dead Smilodon plunge over the edge of the chasm together.....

Luckily for the major, Rick has gunned his rocket pack, and swoops to the rescue, grabbing the major and flying him out of the chasm.

Time passes, and eventually, after evading several native patrols, the group find themselves climbing a steep scree slope towards the pterodactyl's lair. Unfortunately the slope is very exposed, and before too long has passed they are sighted and pursued by a group of natives - who slowly and steadily start to gain on them.

When they are about 100 yards below the cave entrance - with the natives only a few hundred yards behind them, the pterosaur strikes, swooping down form its nest, jaws agape. Rick has been anticipating this, and, gunning the rocket pack swoops in front of the beast before heading at high high speed into the twisting canons of the mountain range, with the pterodactyl in hot pursuit.

On the ground, the rest of the group take their chance and bolt for the cave. Entering it they find human (and animal) bones and remains, and a nest containing 3 eggs. Sheldon is delighted (as is Lee) - they consider their reputations made - providing they can escape with the eggs. Meanwhile Annie is photographing everything in sight, and the major lifts his pistol, preparing to defend the cave....

In the canyons Rick evades a number of attacks by the creature, and fights back - first by flying on his back and firing his pistol at it, and then by cutting the power and grabbing the things shoulders as it flies past. For a few moments he rejoices - he is riding a pterodactyl! But seconds later the thing rolls over, and Rick, losing his grip, plunges into the valley below before re-igniting the pack and once more trying to evade his pursuer. Ahead he sees a number of vertical rock spires and accelerates towards them, a plan forming in his mind...

Back at the cave, the major has taken down one of the natives, but has been wounded by a spear in the leg. Below him on the scree slope he suddenly notices Rick's tommy gun, discarded in favour of his pistol when he took to the air. Casting caution to the winds the major dives headlong down the slope, hoping to burst through the natives by momentum alone, to reach the tommy gun..... he fails and slithers to a halt at the the very feet of the natives. He has however taken then unawares, and is able to spring to his feet, laying about him using the pistol as an improvised club...

Rick heads for the rock spires, and at the last second alters course and dodges between them. The pterodactyl is too big for the gap, and piles into the rock at high speed. Rick sees the creature tumble down the mountainside in a cloud of rocks and debris. Deciding to take no chances, he zooms down the mountain in pursuit - to be surprised as it bursts free of the debris and flies up the mountain straight towards him. He aims his pistol, heads straight for the creature, and starts pulling the trigger...

The major downs one of the natives, and a shot from the cave brings down another. The remaining two exchange glance and then break and run. The major limps back to the cave where Sheldon is making improvised slings to carry the eggs in.

At the last instance the pterodactyl veers off, and Rick puts a final bullet into it - its body tumbles downwards - dead for sure this time. Rick turns and heads back towards the cave and his comrades.

The party are able to make better time on the downwards journey, and arrive back at the beach where the Pegasus is moored well before sundown. The crew drop a rope ladder, and just as they turn to climb it a horde of angry natives surge out of the jungle and charge towards the ship...

There follows a scramble to get up the ladder, whilst the crew cut the mooring ropes and the Pegasus starts to drift out over the ocean. It is a bit hairy, because style points are running low, and rolls are not especially good... Rick has no problems - he just takes off and follows the ship out to sea. The others make it - but only just, with Sheldon last up, trailing his feet in the water.

Eventually everyone is safe on board. There are congratulations (and champagne) all round, and the eggs are bedded down in a make-shift incubator in a spare cabin. The ship heads back towards civilization, and the adventure is drawing to a close.....

....until evening on the second day after leaving the island. The captain spots ominous clouds on the horizon, with no obvious way round them. Deciding to be cautious, he asks the radio operator to find out what ships are in the area, in case assistance may be required. The operator makes contact with the George V and is about to ascertain her position, when the radio suddenly goes off line. Almost simultaneously, the flat sound of an explosion is heard, and the ship lurches to one side.

Everyone rushes to the windows and stares back down the length of the ship. Smoke billows from one of the engine gondolas, which is hanging at a strange angle and has an obvious hole in the side... even as they stare in horror, a shadow flashes by - another pterodactyl! it looks like the first one's mate is out for revenge.

There is a general rush back towards the main body of the ship - but the first crewman up the ladder crashes backwards with a bullet in his shoulder.

The unassuming Mr Bhakti is revealed as a secret thuggee cultist and is attempting to reach the biplane, with the eggs in tow - which he intends to sell to fund the cult's revival. The characters seem trapped in the gondola, and the pterodactyl (and it seems, two of its friends!) are inflicting damage on the airship...

Rick and the major come up with a cunning plan. Rick puts on the rocket pack and siezes his pistol. The major takes up his own pistol, and grabbing each other they leap from the gondola door into the rising winds.

Rick manages to fly them to the Pegasus' upper envelope and makes a reasonable landing. The major makes his way down the upper walkway to the nearest hatchway. He makes he way downwards as quietly as he can...

Meanwhile, Rick dives off the edge of the airship to engage the Pterosaurs. A fierce battle ensues in which Rick suffers a wound from a stabbing beak - but takes out two of the pterosaurs.

In the ship the major emerges silently behind Mr Bhakti, and creeping up on him, claps a gun to his back. Mr Bhakti appears to surrender but then suddenly jumps the major. A fierce battle takes place, which ends when the major shoots Bhakti in the leg, sending him crashing to the ground...

Now the way is clear for the crew who rapidly man the ship's machine guns, taking out the remaining pterodactyl in short order. Rick lands (with some difficulty) and clambers back in board, where he meets up with the major.

The storm has now hit, and the ship shudders from stem to stern. It is clear that she is struggling, and is losing height... Rick and the major realise they must lose weight or the ship will ditch in the ocean. As one, they realise the easiest way to lose weight is to ditch the biplane, and rush towards it.

A particularly strong gust hits the ship, and the major loses his footing and falls from the gantry towards the fabric of the hull. Rick, without a second thought, throws himself after him. Ironically as the major hits the fabric (which tears under him), he grabs one of the cross beams. Rick is not so lucky, and plunges through into the storm. As the Major pulls himself back on board, Rick struggles to land in the high winds - achieving it only through spending his last style point.

Finally they make their way to the biplane - only to realise the release is designed to be operated from the cockpit... Rick is resigned to ding this and making another attempt to fly back on board using the rocket pack - but the major, with a half smile, takes careful aim with his revolver. and triggers the mechanism with an awesome shot.

Freed of the excess weight the Pegasus rides out the storm, and finally limps home, where no doubt fame and accolades await.

(Also awaiting them are those who wish to keep matters such as this, and the hollow earth itself, carefully hidden from the world at large).

So how did it go? Absolutely excellent was the general view - especially the raiding of the nest and the rocket pack pursuit through the mountains. The system is smooth and easy to remember, with a minimum of referring to the rule book once we had been playing for a short time. Style points need to be awarded and spent generously in order to get the true pulp experience. But it would be fair to say this is currently our favourite system for pulp at the moment.

To be continued...

Thanks for posting. I've enjoyed reading this. I've been looking for ideas for a pulp game (I'm planning to use Savage Worlds, though, but might pick up the HEX books for flavour). Hope to read more! ;)

I like Savage Worlds, but HEX seemed somehow easier to grasp at first reading. I like the rule that allows you to take your average (half the skill rating) and succeed automatically if this equals or exceeds the difficulty.

Secrets of the Surface World is pretty essential for playing outside the Hollow Earth, but the secret organisations and societies in both books are excellent background material.
