Style refers to one of 4 values: Silly, Console, Mixed and Brutal--ranging from the most absurd/funny to the realistic/violent. Console, neither too Silly, nor too realistic is the default Style.

Could you discus the different styles in a little more detail?

The idea of Super Console intrigued me when I fist heard of it a while back. This review has sparked my interest again.

"Silly" games are done as a parody of console RPGs, much in the way that the Adventurers!, RPGWorld, or 8-bit Theatre comics are. At least one of the characters knows that things are badly wrong and nothing makes sense. They might even realize they're in a game.

"Console" style games are just straight-up emulation. The characters don't realize that they're in a game.

"Mixed" games try to be a little more realistic. You either adjust nonsensical things until they make sense, or toss them out. I personally tend to flop back and forth between Mixed and Silly when I run a game.

I don't imagine that someone will actually run a "Brutal" style game; they're really there more to show that most people don't want total realism. When someone gets bit by a dragon in a Brutal game, they die on the spot.

There's about a page and a half of discussion on the various styles of play, plus scattered comments throughout the book.

Personally, I really like this series. I had the first edition, Console and the second Super Console. I hope the author continues with a new addition. well, to be honest, I think super console would be one of my go to games but only one thing holds it back for me... i find the rules on doing things outside of combat very slim. I would not mind either a better way to do things out of combat or a small skill section.

Well, to be fair the game's default assumption and focus leaves very little to do outside of combat, besides narrative development... and traveling to the next town, of course! XD

Here's the closest thing to the next edition:

That picture is a link to the development journal. Sidearm still probably won't have a lot of non-combat stuff. Non-combat actions depend more on player skill/choices than they do on character skill in most of the console RPGs I've seen. But I'll think about it.

Sounds promising. I will buy Sidearm when it comes out!
