Do you prefer fantasy games with Minis or without?

I've played for decades with miniatures and a vinyl hex mat. I don't create spectacular layouts, but it helps with the action. I've recently come out of many years of running a private group outside of the gaming community, and have returned to find heated discussions about using figs and mats. Some say it ruins the imagining of what's going on, and takes them out of the game. Some, like me, can't imagine not using figures and a mat. I feel that some figures and a battle mat shouldn't ruin the image in your head any more than having dice and books, and even a laptop in front of you.

I personally like minis in game. I feel it adds a nice perspective to the game. I don't think it can interfer with mental imagery any more than having to roll dice and mark on the character sheet.
