No, seriously.
This past Saturday during the Royals' meeting a character (Victor Royal) who has a (literal) inner-demon lost control, necessitating the rest of the players to subdue him. I'm a little fuzzy on what happened exactly, but someone got the absolutely brilliant idea for us to all to go to the Pocket D arena, where we set up a custom team match, then it was 6? 7? against 1 with a 10-minute time limit. Victor could respawn as often as needed, but everyone else could only be beaten once. You get KO'd, you sat out. At the end of the time limit, Victor (a level 50) had defeated two folks - not the wipeout we were expecting given most everyone else was below level 30 as I recall.
Anyhow... that was great.
I was wondering; how could one encourage folks who are normally role-players to engage in PVP? I'm not talking the PVP zones, mind you.
I think the non-IOP base raids don't require that you pay for repairs later on. Might be useful for certain storylines. Also, you do get to fight in the SG base rather than handwaving "This is not a derelict warehouse."
The Arena has a plethora of options.
PVP just means "player versus player." We went into the Arena once and played tag. That's certainly PVP!
City of Pokemon/Gladiators could be neat.
I'm just curious, really. Ideas? Suggestions?

Well, if you do end up doing something like this again, count me out. I hate how stressed out PvP like that gets me. Last time I was involved in it (CG & Zack vs. Nerd Rage & Fomorian), I had to turn off the game and go calm down.

I think you hit on just the right way - for an RP crowd there needs to be a story element to give the PvP meaning.
The closest I've come to that was a character I had in a themed SG. Stone/Stone wasn't working for me as a Brute so I was on the fence about going forward or rerolling as either a Hero or a Villain.
We set up a series of 5 PvP duels to chronicle "Core Breaks" attempt to escape from the Nest (the VG). The rules were if I won all 5 then I'd continue on with Stone/Stone and wrest leadership from the then current leader (we're all friends in RL so no big there). If I lost all 5 then Core Break was killed in the escape attempt and would just be deleted. If I won more than I lost then I escaped to our counterpart hero group and would reroll there.
What actually happened was that I went 2 win, 2 losses and in the 5th and final fight...lost! So Core Break was recaptured by the Nest and put through their ever-so-merciful "Re-Education Program", emerging as an Electric Brute.
The matches were pretty fun for all involved and served as a neat story point for the group, which is pretty much the end goal for any RP session.

That's perfectly understandable.
Did you play tag with us? How was that? I mean, its not exactly *normal* PVP, I realize...

The whole thing between us and Victor (The Architect) was pretty darn one sided in hindsight. I guess the Arena tries to help equalize things somewhat. Don't think any of us are going to PVP for pink-slips, though ;)
I've RP-PVP'd with Pill and Scoundrel before. One was Nadir versus Legionnaire Tyr (EM/D Brute vs ?/? Tank), then Archer Deft (TA/A Defender) and Blue Pyra (E/E Blaster) "training" (not quite a date). So, yeah, there was fighting, but also talking before, during and after...
But, yeah - story motivated (possibly with one player willing to "take one for the team" by letting his/her character get wailed on) works for me. But if someone doesn't enjoy it, well, no point... guess they can be hand-waved in later on for all intents and purposes...

*shrugs* BS/Inv Scrapper, by that point, I think. Pretty sure it was after I had re-rolled him, because I was in the early to mid 20s. Wasn't Nadir 2 levels higher than Tyr? I seem to recall that being a bit of a concern, but going through with it anyways.
Pretty sure it was the scrapper version, because I'd been early 30s, for a while, when I deleted Tyr. And I'm pretty sure we weren't doing dueling Energy Melees.
I am not averse to doing the RP-PVP thing, kinda sad I missed out this week.

I think it was the tank version; I could not get enough Fury to do anything about your damage resistance. Got beat, oh yeah, I got beat.
And Nadir was ahead of Tyr, but I think it was more than two levels. +2 isn't a big deal...

I think the Fury bar not building up enough was due to the one on one nature. Maybe I'm wrong here, but it seems to me that Fury needs more than a one to one to really get it going.

Maybe. I don't know if the fix to Fury for PVP and Giant Monsters had been implemented back then. Either way, though, you handed me my butt.
I did scare ya TP'ing in, though ;)
It was fun.
I really wonder how levels are handled in the arena. Victor was a level 50 scrapper and I was able to survive tanking him through the whole 10 minutes on my level 28 WP tank. I think Madcat only tossed one or two heals my way the whole time, too.

I think that PVPing with people I knew would be the only way I'd even consider doing it, because then I know it's just for fun instead of helping someone feel like his NerdWang™ is bigger than mine.

No doubt about that. I think we may have talked about it at one point, but it didn't occur to me when we were standing there one on one. And the big flash for a tp right next to me, that messed me up for a second there.

I was throwing the -damage debuffs out quite a bit, but I'm not sure if that would have made that much difference with that level difference in PvE.
