Hi all. I think my previous gallery thread got purged so just wanted to stop by, show some newer work and get the word out that I'm looking for work. Thanks for looking.

Excellent stuff, but could use a bit more contrast when transferred to the computer screen. The glare makes 'em a bit difficult to see.

Great pencils. I Agree with Destriarch though, you could do with darkening the pieces. The Dwarf and Spider critter are very well done, but there are some anatomy issues with the archer figure.

Hi Danny, still love the work!

Quick tip for punching up your tones in Photoshop if you have it, but don't want to get into adjusting levels . Copy and paste the whole canvas, set the new layer created to a multiply layer, reduce the opacity to about 50%, and there you go. Its not perfect, and its better to learn about adjusting levels, but its a quick fix for display.

Jon, that's exactly what I need: something quick & useful where I won't need to spend anymore time in PS than I need to.

I love your line work and values. I hope that you don't mind, but I wanted to see what it would look like with darkened levels in a sepia tone Your work has a very nice 'texture' to it that plays well in warm and cool tones.

Here's my unauthorized alteration of your artwork.;)
Photoshop>duplicate layer>change layer mode to multiply @ 100%> image, adjust levels....do what feels good> merge visible
Now you're ready for color.

Hello Mr. Cruz,

Great work and (IMO) very reminiscent of Frazetta (my favorite Fantasy artist!). Although I agree that by darkening it a bit, it does make your work stand out more and makes it more striking.

I wanted to contact you about a project, but I can't find any contact info for you.

Please contact me at your convenience: PCIHenry <at> aol <dot> com

Thanks in advance!

The difference between a guy like you and a guy like me is this:
You have the Ferrari ( skill ) while I have a PT Cruiser ( a moderate technical aptitude with software )
I go 35 MPH because it's all I can do....you go 35 MPH because you haven't tapped the gas yet.
Your work is great, dude. Maybe I'm jealous...and then again, maybe I'm jealous.

Since we're using car metaphors for our artistic skills, I sometimes feel like I'm driving a Gremlin with bad brakes, sugar in the gas tank, and the stereo blasting Metallica.

...I don't even know what that means.

Dude, that's really awesome! The effect of the monster bursting forth is perfect.

The only complaint I have about the piece is that Conan's (or whomever) head gets kind of lost in the composition.

Thanks...it hadn't occurred to me about the head being lost in the composotion but, yeah, I can see your point.

Here's something new I did. No back story or anything to it...just wanted to do a cool looking cyborg character.
Thanks for looking & have a happy Thanksgiving everyone.

Wow these lovely drawings shall not sink unloved by comment!

I really dig your technique Danny - its quite unusual. Love the lost edges - again something I'm not used to seeing a lot of in pencil work.

The devilish feller with the severed head is just dripping with cool observations and details. Lots to appreciate in there. Good stuff!

Wow, really nice. The shading really does it for me. It makes everything pop. The anatomy, other than some small problems with the archer, is really good.

Sorry but I'm going to mention something about the archer too. Archery is a very fussy sport. There are a lot of little details. The arrows must be slightly longer than the archer's arm. These look a little short. There has to be a nock on the end of the arrow that the string fits into. Two of the flights (feathers) are the same color, the third is another color. This flight points away from the bow when it is nocked and ready to fire.

A good archer always draws the arrow with thumb, index and middle finger holding the nock - the very end of the arrow. If he doesn't, then he has to change his hand position on the arrow before he can use the arrow - and he's only got one hand to do it.

There should be a lip on the bow, right above the hand, which the arrow rests on. You can rest it on your hand but it hurts. Some archers keep the index finger of their bow hand straight. It kind of helps aim.

Your bow is obviously a recurve. However, when they are strung, bows all take on a similar curve. The recurve mostly vanishes. This one looks like the string isn't quite tight enough.

I'm not trying to be a jerk or anything. I've done a bit of archery and I'm very hoping this information is useful to you. I really recomend all fantasy artists try a day of archery training and another day of sword training. This will really give you a lot of information about combat. (I was writing about Conan and sword making and had the good fortune of finding an working historical smithy in my area.)

I really love that warhammer. It's just scary.

As far as influences go...Frazetta, Rich Corben, Glenn Fabry, Simon Bisley, Geof Darrow, Vaughn Bode....the usual lol. I'd consider those guys to be my long term influences...guys who's work I've admired for years and years and years. I may not be looking at their stuff all the time like I used to be I'm always going to love them.

Ah yeah I really see the Corben influence now you mention it(in a good way - I know sometimes folks can get a bit prickled by talk of influences as if its about copying or something, which isn't what I mean at all) and Frazetta too.

Keep on rockin' my man!

Thanks. Pretty damn flattered that you are able to see the influence actually...especially since it's not a concious thing that I'm going after these days. I guess that stuff is just permently burned into my brain or something lol.
Anyway, influences are a good thing...you can't create art in a vacuum.

Dude, lovely work, seriously, but please stop using lined paper! It's such a shame to see these works of art being marred by those pale blue horizontal bars. Careful use of photoshop might remove them - try converting to grayscale and fiddling with the contrast until they disappear, or I'm sure there's some way to separate them out by their colour. I'm no digital painting expert though.

Spoil yourself by splashing out on some quality drawing paper.

If it was from a purely rough/sketchbook angle I quite like the lines showing through. It's like seeing an architects initial design for a building on the back of an envelope, the surface that has been used adds to the story.

Anyway I digress, works looking great as usual and I look forward to seeing the results from up-sizing.

It took me literally 5 tries to read this last piece. My suggestion would be to make sure that you're effectively using your line weights to differentiate foreground and background elements. The orc's (I think that's what it is) arm with the spikey bits should have much heaver line weights than the creature that it's overlapping. With close attention to those line weights I think that the piece would have read easily on first pass. Overall, cool stuff, I'd just work on refining your work a bit so that it looks a bit more polished and clean in final presentation.

Here's something different from me. A mixed media painting...I've only started dabbling in paints a few months ago...this is actually my second real attempt at one. I know it's not really up to the standards of the painted work that a lot of peeps on this board are doing, but, I thought it might be interesting to see something other than B&W art from me.
