Is there anything that would prevent a small beastmaster ranger from riding his companion animal, as they are medium in size generally?
Only thing I can think of, and this may just be me misremembering, is that don't mounts have a "mount" keyword or something?
Not that you can't houserule it (and I wouldn't mind such a thing) but it may not be permissible by RAW unless the beast companion has the "mount" keyword. I really don't remember though, and I don't have my books handy.

Creatures that have the "mount" keyword have special abilities unlock when someone with a mounted combat feat rides them. But technically, if you can tame and saddle something, it can be ridden.

Small characters can't ride Medium mounts. It's a specific (not to mention fucking stupid) exception in the mount rules. Gimme a second, I'll give you chapter and verse...
Got it. Bottom of page 46, Dungeon Master's Guide. Size: Your mount must be larger than you, and no smaller than Large size.Note, though, that you can cast Beast Growth on your animal companion.

Note that you should cast Beast Growth on your animal companion.
