I just recently noticed that Battleforge is now Free2Play (apparently so in May! very late to the party, I am.)

http://www.battleforge.com

I downloaded it and have played through the first couple of single player missions and am enjoying it a lot. I don't hear much about it, even though PC Gamer at least (via ATI/Radeon ads) pushed it a lot a few months ago.

I'm curious what everyone's take is on the game, and whether or not it stands the test of time or if it's a one-month-er game that quickly grows stale. It seems to have a lot of potential and is certainly an interesting hybrid RTS/TCG/MMO.

It's mostly a RTS/TCG with multiplayer, because i don't see the MMO features (Auction House, Trade, Friend Lists are not only for MMOs). It does have a PvE side for "building up" before you enter the PvP side, because augmenting your cards is frankly potent.

I don't think it will get much better, although i like that there is a team still balancing and putting out more maps, unlocking the new stages of play ... but since keeping the ~300 cards balanced is a problem, and those cards don't give nearly the amount of depth i'd like for the game (MtG player here), i think they face a problem of scale. The content is consumed fast, and while there is an expansion looming (this fall?), i don't think they have retained the necessary amount of players to keep going.

Anyway, this is a nice try from EA giving them leeway. I think the free to play move was spot on, and i did buy some boosters/tomes.

The RTS part is probably on the path to flavor of the month decks, which is not necessarily bad, but is a bit frustrating to the devs and newbs.
