I don't think I've seen anything about this game here, so I figure a lot of people probably did what I did and dismiss based on the title and the picture of the busty gal with a sword and two guns on the cover as some sort of crappy fanservicey generic shooter.

On impulse, I DL'ed the demo from Xbox Live and WOW. This game is hugely fun.

The title is short for Wetworks, by the way.

Somebody set out to make a 70's grindhouse-cinema style game and succeeded admirably. There's even a scratchy film-grain effect (which I'm given to understand can be turned off if you don't like it). The soundtrack is all original, grimy surf-rock type music that is fantastic and matches the action perfectly.

You're Rubi (voiced by Eliza Dushku), some kind of assassin for hire whose job gets interrupted apparently, in the opening cinematic. From there you go into an in-combat tutorial where they show you each of your moves by pausing the action, and then give you a couple of enemies to try it out on.

You can jump, slide on your knees, wallrun, and various combinations and permutations of those things, and if you pull the trigger while doing any of those, bullet time kicks in and you can mow down enemies in midair in slow-mo. It's way funner than it sounds.

You mow through some goons as you travel through the demo level learning about your abilities, then it corners you in an enclosed area with three enemy spawn points (doors they come in through), where the goal is to disable the spawn points and then kill the remaining enemies. Here you get to sandbox around trying out different moves and combos, and by god it's fun. Your health regen in these sections is determined by your combo score.

After you get through that, you get a taste of Rubi Vision, which is activated somehow in the game proper (here in the demo, they activate if for you) where you start seeing red, literally. The enemies all look like characters out of Sin City, but everything else is just red, so they stand out and I'm not sure what's mechanically different but I know I mowed down a lot of them.

Then the bad guy starts getting away by car in a cutscene, and the camera pulls back to reveal you, clinging to the side of a passing truck. Here you get to chase the bad guys by jumping from one car's roof to another while they shoot at you and you get to shoot them in return. There's a lot of quick time events here, but even during those you get to keep shooting.

I had a total blast with this demo, so much so that I just had to post about it. The design and overall aesthetic just hits all the right buttons for me. It's definitely inspired by 70's grindhouse action movies, but probably even more so by their recent modern homages by Tarantino and Rodriguez. I'll definitely be picking up this game and I'm wondering if anyone else here played the demo and what your thoughts were.

It seemed alright to me. I had a bastard of a time figuring out how to do anything, and it had a quicktime sequence with some sort of inscrutable timing trick (hitting the button when it appears on screen is not enough!)... the frustration nibbled away at the fun.

Hoping the final game has useful tutorials.

It's nice to hear someone liked the demo so enthusiastically. :)

I've stated my opinion before, and it was that while I really liked the overall aesthetic and music, the gameplay itself just left me cold. A mix between feeling clunky, and just not offering new exciting stuffs (or even next-gen graphics). I mean, I already played Max Payne years ago.

It's a shame, because I wanted to like this game. As it is, I think it seems like an alright little shooter to pick up for 10$ from bargain bin at some point.

I didn't like the demo at all. I was extremely excited about WET until I played it.

Rubi doesn't chain her moves together effectively at all. I lost count of how many times I slid into a table, or fell off a wall, or just came out of a move to stand there like an idiot in the middle of the room. Games like Devil May Cry excel because the player is always in control - if their instincts say 'jump', the button will respond, even if they're in the middle of another animation. WET doesn't have that.
It is impressive, though, that they managed to make slow-motion gunplay boring. I think I'd shoot myself after listening to that slow BOOM-BOOM-BOOM-BOOM-BOOM-BOOM for an hour.

The arena portion of the demo was all right, but felt really forced. There wasn't enough interesting things to interact with, so I ended up just flipping back and forth between a couple of horizontal bars, until I had enough of a combo to be allowed to attack the spawn points.

The rage sequence was fun...until I missed a jump and hit a wall, and then I couldn't see what I was doing because of the solid-color palette. So my rage-filled ultra-assassin spent a minute or so walking in circles and jumping against walls, hoping to accidentally stumble upon a way forward.

And I was so pissed about the freeway sequence. It looked great in videos...but when I got there, it's only a cutscene. (Yes, holding down R1 and pressing X occasionally makes it a cutscene.)

I was glad to play the demo, though. Saved me $60.

I thought it was mediocre, really with one exception. The music during the big gun fight with the three spawn locations is ace and suddenly makes the awkward gameplay seem a hell of a lot more fun.

My main issue is that it's doing what Max Payne did all those years back and most importantly not quite as well which is pretty unforgivable.

I loved the demo, so I will probably end up picking this up. The psychobilly soundtrack is fucking rocking, but I may be a little biased on this, because I'm a big fan of psychobilly, and 2 bands I'm friends with have songs on the soundtrack, Three Bad Jacks and The Chop Tops.

That whole screaming 'Insaaayyyneeaaayyne' is good music? Man, I had to mute that after like a minute.

Eh... It's the type of music I listen to. So yeah.

Thanks been trying to find that, there's a decent quality version linked on their myspace from the video.

Cool. I actually want to apologize for disparaging your taste in music; it never crossed my mind that it was actually a licensed song.

I had the same problem that others - clunky controls that don't make movement fluid at all and too often leave Rubi standing like a fool in the middle of the action.

It has a killer soundtrack, though.

No worries, I also like Dire Straits so I'm used to it ;)

It seems like a crazy psychobilly version of Mirror's Edge, blended with both Grindhouse and Sin City. Is this close?

Throw Kill Bill in there too....

Throw Kill Bill in there too....

Yeah, I'd go with that, except a third-person version of Mirror's Edge where there's no Achievement for not shooting people.

I rented it last night and had a lot of fun with it, so far.

I just bought this today. The graphics are a bit rough and it is a little clunky, but it weirdly seems to fit the aesthetic of the game. I just find it loads of fun! Especially the grindhouse elements like the "visit the snack bar" intermissions and the silly combat mechanics.

Oddly I can forgive a lot because the gameplay is mostly fun and entertaining. Silly but cool. :)

i've found the secret is really to constantly stay on the move. if you stay still, you are gonna die.

I have not played the Demo, but I did pick this up for my PS 3 during a recent buy 2, get 1 free sale at Best Buy. Between this and Borderlands (and Arkham Asylum which I just recently finished), I'm back to gaming on my console (as opposed to using it mostly as a Blu Ray player).

Honestly, it is lacking somewhat in polish, and the graphics are suprisingly crude for a new release, "next gen" title. But it's largely made up for by fun factor (for me at least), and it has a real cinematic feel to it. So far it's just a lot of fun to play. Gunning and cutting down mooks never gets old--yeah, yeah, talk to me after 10 hours of gameplay and I'll let you know how I feel then. For the moment it's still a rush.

And having Eliza Dushku voicing the main character doesn't hurt. Of course I'm the guy that always brought Shaundi along on my missions in Saints Row 2, so take that for what it's worth. :D

Finished the game today. For the record: cutting down mooks by the dozen and performing acrobatic slow motion kills with dual pistols...still fun! The game was surprisingly short--though to be fair, I did play a fairly hardcore marathon session this afternoon. There's enough good stuff in there that I hope a sequel gets made.

For now, I'm gonna play through again on "Golden Bullet" setting--which apparently lets you one shot all the mooks in exchange for being easier to kill yourself or something.
