Hi all.

I am looking for a good 1st level module to test out the 4e rulesystem. I have both Keep on the Shadowfell and Rescue at Rivenroar, and have even run parts of KoTS. However, I think both look kinda crawly for my tastes, so I was wondering if anyone had any good suggestions.

I have read some reviews, and I think the consensus is that RoR > KotS, so that will be my choice if not anything else comes to mind.

Thank you :)

If you are looking for published modules, then your best bet would be Spectre Tower of Spellguard.

Or any of several low-level Dungeon Crawl Classics from Goodman Games. While they have "crawl" in the title, I find they have more charm and story/plot than most of the WotC adventures. (Admittedly, they're a bit shorter in length.)

However, for testing out the rules I'd suspect you want to go with a somewhat more standard crawl, as it'll get you accustomed to combat--and you can always "inject" the adventure with more role-playing opportunities if you so desire.

If you're playing in FR, I enjoyed running the "Loudwater" adventures - the town is fairly well developed and the first dungeon is a good one to cut newbies' teeth on.

I am running the Wizards' module called Kyber's Harvest(link anyone?) right now. It is for 2nd level and set in Eberron, but I very easily modified it. It is basically a short investigation/rp in a remote village and then a short straightforward dungeon with some very evocative parts.
Basically, my opinion is that an intro adventure should be short and concise, whether I'm beginning a campaign or introducing people to the game. Its just nice to begin and end a story in 1-3 sessions rather than the 10-12 sessions that KOTS etc might require...

You might try Raiders of Oakhurst (http://sites.google.com/site/nonamepublishing/Home/products/roor). It's a nice, free adventure. While it doesn't utilize Skill Challenges, it was fun to run.

Thanks for the suggestions.

I have the FRCS book, so one option to start with the Loudwater adventure and then move on to either Spellgard or one of the Dungeon modules, something with an Icy Tower.. don't remember the title right now, but I have heard some good things about it.

Spellguard is a good choice.

But at the same time, at least Shadowfell, isnt' just one giant crawl. There are several different locals where combat can take place and a town where the characters can find allies and more quests. In terms of interaction with the townsfolk, isn't that what the players and GM bring to the session?

More importantly, free counter pack.

Both Eberron's Mark of Prophecy + Seekers of the Ashen Crown and FR's Barrow of the Ogre King + Menace of the Icy Spire + Scepter Tower of Spellgard are better than RoR and KotS IMO

Remains of the Empire is a good opening module but its set for level 4.

I have modified Village of Hommlet 4e for good effect as an opening adventure.

Thanks.

It seems to me that there are several options out there. I'll check out the Loudwater chapter in the FRCG and move on from there, I think.

Again, thanks for all the answers :)
