hello everyone! my name is glenn israel, aka delo, and i'm a freelance conceptual designer and illustrator, specializing in line art character realization. i've spent the past five years in the pc gaming industry, but have recently opened up some opportunities in the tabletop and traditional rpg industries and am certainly looking to explore that avenue in greater detail. if you'd like to see samples of work, some short fiction, and my resume (with contact information), please visit my portfolio at idiomatic (http://www.delopolis.com/content/portfolio.html). thanks, and once again, hello! ;-)

Lewis pretty much took the words right out of my mouth Glenn. I've actually been to your site before by way of Ben Henry's eatpoo.com. Very nice work, very nice.

You definitely have some nice drawing skills going on there!

Man, that is some amazing stuff! I think I need to begin to move more into the computer age. Its hard for a stoggy old traditional pencil-in-hand drawer like me, but the effects you can create are so impressive...

Brother, that is some of the tightest, cleanest pencil work I have ever seen.

Top notch work, and an impressive portfolio. You should have no trouble expanding into any avenue you want.

*slouching back to the drawing board, humbled yet again*

Damn fine work, Glenn!

Cool name too. I wish I had a country for a last name.

The site is very well done. I really liked the layout and design of it. It's a little slow on my computer, but every site is slow with my connection.

Your'e definitely a character designer. You've made some very creative and awesome looking dudes! With your computer modeling skills, you should be working for every gaming company out there.

Fantastic stuff!

Welcome aboard!

Hey Delo,

Awesome work!
It's nice to see new faces pop up .
Your work is highly imaginative and your site presents it very well.
It will be interesting to see future posts from ya and to get your perspective on the discussions that get started in the threads.
Welcome aboard!:)
Post often!

thanks for the kind words everyone! i look forward to learning much more about the industry and (hopefully) forming and expressing some constructive opinions on the nature of the biz ;-)

david: you'd be surprised at how difficult it is to expand into a single avenue, let alone another. it seems to be a case of right place, right time, with the right connections, and the plantes don't align that way very often ;-) hopefully, that won't always be the case.

a question to the other freelancers out there: do you find that web presence in the form of forum memberships and chatrooms et al provide more opportunities for work and growth? i've had some difficulty positioning myself in such a way that insures a steady flow of interest, which leads me to wonder if it's my particular abilities or my approach that is at fault. . .

thanks again everyone ;-)

RE: The web presence thing - For me it's been 50/50. The best 2 gigs I ever got was through networking face to face, and the planets being in the right alignment, as you so correctly observe!

The 2 next best gigs came through RPGnet, so I would say it's well worth it persisting. (Oh no what have I done? Cue thousands of posts)

My website has been an invaluable resource too. It's just easy for clients to look at - and easier to promote than paper samples.

I have to say recently I've fallen back into seeing this forum as a friendly hang-out, perhaps more so than a place to get work. But I don't think the two are mutually exclusive by any means. Being relaxed in the company of regular buddies here perhaps gives you an opportunity to show your personality as well as your work!

Recently I've been showing more personal work, rather than strictly RPG manual stuff. And I'm enjoying that.

Noel,

I don't think you were too serious, but you've got it all wrong.
Think about it for a second. Take a look around you at the cadre of talent lurking around here on a semi-regular basis. This should be a GREAT thing for all of you guys! I think more publishers are going to start coming here looking for artists. For instance, Misguided Games has three different artists from this forum who are currently working with us or who have previously. I have talked with several others about various possibilities. Keep up the good work. This is growing into a fantastic community and i think good things will continue to happen here.

too serious?!? Moi?
I've yet to receive a mail from an AD saying "here's a wad of cash, will you do me a load of tasty artwork?"
*cue the sound of a dozen ADs poised at keyboards...*
I'm a very patient man fortunately and I do hope it can only be a good thing that someone is much better than me.
I'm just wondering how...

I take it you have worked together

not in any professional sense, although as a (fairly vocal) member of francis' teamgt conceptual design forum, we've participated together in a number of public design projects. if you'll notice the image names, francis' creation is known as 'gallandro', which i interpreted as 'gallant droid' (obviously a western hero type), so i countered with 'black bardro' ('black bart droid', a nod to the cheesy antagonist trope in classic westerns) ;-)
this was a project of francis' devising (he's a great guy and extremely talented designer); if you'd like to see some of the stuff that he's contributed to the dormant 'delopolis web project', feel free to check out the source at http://www.delopolis.com/ and the forum/gallery at http://pub72.ezboard.com/bthedelopoliswebproject

awesome stuff there. I especially like the variations of guns etc. I like to do that myself. I'm somehow known to be a weapons designer, (just another feather in the cap to me) and I did one with variations. Never thought of colouring them though. My education I suppose.
Now....if you're as funny as you are good at graphics then we're gonna get along like an orphanage on fire.

Hey, nice to see another Polycounter here!

As for myself, I have no web presence. I do all my networking the old fashioned way. I also prefer working with friends, which is fine, as long as I don't rely on artwork to pay the bills all by themselves.

Yeah, I've been asked about comic strips before...sigh.

I have a standing offer to do a comic book for Radio Comix, but I don't do comics. Well, actually, what I mean is that I don't do them very well. Mostly I just do covers and occasional inside pics. Stringing the pictures around a storyline is a skill I have not even come close to mastering.

Right now I'm supposed to be working on a demo reel. I'm also supposed to be working on some interior illos for a RPG. I'm also supposed to be working on concept sketches for more catfight characters. Guess which one's probably going to happen first?

Oh, and delo - very, very good looking stuff.
