I love your take on Odin. It's very classical, but still has a load of originality.

Okay, this looks like a good place for my first post. :)

First things first... your backgrounds are breathtaking. There's such a strong right-brained sense of style and depth to this bg that I find myself staring into it (pretty good, as I myself cannot see in three dimensions, sight problem).

Your fore-figure, however, brings the piece down a lot. Leaving aside the obvious impression that you have a stronger feel for the inanimate than the animate, the first thing I see with this picture is a stark contrast other than the sort you intended. Everything int he BG has depth, the axes are in front of the wall, the side walls are seperate from the back wall, the chair is seperate from the back wall... but Odin himself , the crows, and the spear all look flat against the chair. As far as I can tell, it seems to be in part due to the serious, straight lines you've used throughout the entire piece (see the folds on the cloth over his legs, very strong lines, and all look right -- except that they're all so incredibly straight and thought-out). It seemed almost like you were so interested in the BG that the foreground was put in only out of a sense of obligation to include him. You just seemed to have so much stronger a connection with the BG.

Oliver, please excuse me while I boast for you:
Hey folks, this guys good. In case you may not know, The "Odin" piece is an Editor's Pick over at Epilogue and there is some very good work there (so good, that I haven't made it in there yet, grumble). Congrats Oliver, you deserve it and your talents are very obvious. Please post more when you can.

Thanks,
Eric
