The game is distributed in the U.S. as Uplink: Hacker Elite (http://www.introversion.co.uk/uplink/hackerelite.html) by the same distributors as Galactic Civilizations (http://www.galciv.com/).

So, how long do you think it'll take before the guys at Something Awful get tired of all the PSed covers of this game people send in with the text changed to "Uplink: 1337 |-|4XX012?"
007Bistromath sez about three days.

:D :D
I rather loved this game, and due to the wonderful people at Ambrosia Software, it has been ported to the Mac. GLEEEEE!
The only hacker game that comes at all close to getting it "right", at least so far as I've been able to find, and I've tried a lot of them. Even played this crappy ass BBS door game once, in my tireless search for a game that would simulate the joy of hacking, without landing me in jail.

... crap. It apparently requires MacOS 9. Which I do not have. I feel strangely homicidal.
Grr.
EDIT: I also had to download the entire thing to find that out. You'd think they might tell you important stuff like that on the friggin' website.
I now feel slightly more homicidal.

Uplink was a pretty cool game at first, but it seems that once you get to the mid-point of the game, level-wise, it just fizzles out. Missions don't get any more complex once you work your way up to Grade 7 or so. That, and the continued bugginess of certain missions made me lose interest after a short while.
Anyway, I got tired of seeing the same questions over and over and over again on Introversion's forums, so I wrote a mission guide (http://www.sche.net/uplinkguide/). It doesn't cover LAN hacking at all, but I figured I'd mention it anyway, in case the exact same questions show up here. :)

I just got this game from Ambrosia last night, and good lord..... I never realized that hacking could be such an adrenaline rush. My heart starts beating faster and faster as I watch the Tracewatch percentage creep higher and higher. And I felt damn satisfied with myself the first time I actually managed to pull off a hack on the social security database (I only started playing last night, so that was a big deal for me...).
I can see this game sucking up a good deal of my free time in the near future.

*bump*
Got this cos it was $9.99 or something off Steam, which is frankly ridiculously cheap. And I love it. Sure, I got caught hacking a bank and had to start from square one again (not sure how that happened), but it's still fun and it's keeping me occupied until Defcon comes out.
Anyone else still playing/remember this?
EDIT: This should probably be in OGO...

Once of the great classics... but old enough that a UI update probably isn't out of the question if they remade it.

Wow, where is that "Rise of the Thread" poster at when we need it?
I discovered this game recently myself. It most definately is a lot of fun, but definately needs an updated UI. The game after this one, Darwinia, is also a major kick in the butt, very fun.
I'm stoked to the max about Defcon.

Hmm I kinda wish this game had slightly less harsh penalties for failure... rather than just saying 'Guess what? You forgot to erase something. No we won't tell you what it was. Game Over.'
Kinda frustrating... still fun though :)

I discovered this game recently myself. It most definately is a lot of fun, but definately needs an updated UI.I don't know - the retro UI is part of the gameplay. It wouldn't be nearly so much fun if you could just click a button and have the game take care of all the details for you.
