Thought I'd show you all this piece I did for a guy in California who is putting together a video game. Unfortunately it was a little frustrating working for the guy, I won't go into all the details but the lowdown was his ideas were pretty limited, so I did my best to take what he gave me and make it look as cool as possible. This is to be the advertising poster for his video game, also I believe it is to be the box art. Whether it all comes together remains to be seen...
Anyway, I was fairly happy with how it came out technically. Let me know your thoughts on this! :)

From a design POV, I have a problem with the beams of light coming at the same height heirarchy. It really pushes the eye right to the figure and they (figures) are so centered. And those beams are so centered.

I would love to see one beam coming from slightly above the waist line and one from below. That would give a "dynamic" balance.

Nice colors though.

nice use of color, you seem to have a knack for picking interresting color combos. this "box" illustration has a very eighties design feel to it for me. The illustration is solid, you might not think this a compliment but the rock the character is standing on is really nice, and the composition is fine, but its very static. bending the Knight figure or twisting him would add a huge amount of movement, he doesnt really seem like he's protecting the "child/guy".

this is a fine piece, i just think adding simple twisting movements to both figures could help it out alot. i can also see Storns crit regarding the beams, by being centered, end up adding to the static feel.

keep posting

from your description, i'm kinda interrested to hear the history behind this job tho'

I agree with Storn (getting to be a habit, I need to beat him to the posts so he has to agree with me, instead), the beams of light coming in from exactly the same height on both sides is very distracting.

The child needs a different color scheme than the knight. At first glance, I didn't even see him.

Where'd the knight's left lower leg go? I think it's in shadow but it's unclear. Show more of it, or set it off more from the background, so that it doesn't seem to be disappearing.

The design is good, and elements are appropriately spaced to allow for a title and bottom copy. The colors are good in those areas too, nice and dark to make light text stand out, without looking artificially so.

Hi again,

Storn - Thanks for your comments, that was the intention, to have your eye drawn to the figures. But I see what you mean.

Mahubrahd - Thanks. I actually enjoyed doing the rock more than the figures! The reason it looks sort of eighties is because I was following the director's ideas...not very good ideas. He pretty much told me how he wanted the armor to look and what colors the kid had to wear. As far as the story goes for the game, the most I can tell you is that it starts with a hip hop street wise kid who when he puts on the armor turns into a super hero warrior and goes to fight monsters and such (ho hum...). Glad you generally like the piece though.

JSpektr - I agree with you about the color scheme, but again I had to follow what the director wanted. The knight's left lower leg is bent back...can you see it? Yes it is kind of in shadow.
