Long story short: Went downtown, made deck, went to friend's house, played. Oh so much fun. I can't recommend this game highly enough, it's the first CCG I've actually wanted to play in ages.
So, to give this thread a point: Does anyone else play, or have advice on building an effective Crane deck?

Are you playing with the newest cards, or older stuff?
Crane has pretty much always been good with honor-producing holdings. Mix those in with high-personal honor high chi characters and lots of defensive actions and duels.
These days you might be able to run military/honor effectively, but its been about a year since I payed attention to the environment.

We're playing Gold Edition and newer. Right now the deck is pretty much geared to honour run and duel, with a few tricks thrown in to get me out of big fights. It's sick how quickly that deck can hit 40 honour, if I live long enough to reach it.

I had about $7,000 is L5R decks. Then they did the whole Scorpion Clan Coup thing, and lost me. That was about 5 years ago.

Are you on the 'yoritomo' yahoogroup? They've come up with some pretty successful archetypes for current Mantis, if you're interested. The list is a shadow of what it used to be, but they still have some good things going on.

I don't really do L5R anymore. My East Asian Studies classes gave me enough information that the whacky historical/mythological conglomoration that is Rokugan became less marvelous to me. The fact that Mantis was not playable for Gold and two sets afterward drained by enthusiasm, The switch to Dual-Stat paired with a price increase also kept me away from the RPGs. And all the while, school took up more and more of my time.
L5R and I have grown apart, one might say. It is somewhat sad.

It once murdered my walllet, as a CCG. Then again as an RPG.
It now no longer does so (though at some point I need to catch up RPG wise).
I only pay attention to the story, and maintain the lists devoted to such.
How about that Naseru for Emperor????
...Fuck. I just spoiled that, didn't I.
- The King knows that anyone who hasn't known that for four days hasn't really been paying attention.

Sounds like last night's game.
"You lose seven honour."
"Oh man, that sucks.. Wait a minute. Imperial Favour!"
"I hate you."

Yeah, but most of the time, if you have the favor that means that people can't use it against you.

Unless those dastardly Scorpion steal it.

Assuming I get a job someday, I may actually pick up some cards when Diamond Edition comes out (in October, I think?). I'd only play for fun, though. I'm not competitive enough to have a good time in a tournament situation.
I've always liked the RPG. Don't like the fact that the card-players get so much more control over the metaplot than the roleplayers, though (especially when they give us wacky nonsensical results).

Diamond does in fact come out in October. This next expansion is the conclusion for the Gold story arc. I doubt you'd see me playing in any big tournaments, this thing I'm going to is just something the FLGS is holding for the new set. Wish me luck! ;)

On the necromantic gig today, for a nice gold Crane deck go to Kuroiban.net (link in sig), Secrets - Decks. That is what i am running, is easily copiable, a lot of rares can be replaced by less hard to find cards...
I also have a lot of links to Clan specific forums out there; but if you register I will help you and yell at people who tease you, as it is my forum, and I like Crane a lot.

I've still got a bunch of decks, though I don't play as much (I don't care to spend the money to actually stay competitive, especially since the big players around Milwaukee that I know are all the psychotic "I'm ranked third in my clan" types. Seriously) The most obvious thing for Cranes is to run with Brokaten Shiro. Sorry, Kosaten Shiro. Only Towers of the Yogo has a more useful stronghold ability. Until that those two cards are outlawed (which I think might happen in Diamond Edition) there is no reason to run any other Crane stronghold. And get lots of Send Home Tech. Very important.

I believe I have found my ancient cards, remind me again are the black scrolls cool? I could still play the game but I don't think half of my stuff is legal. From reading the posts above they have made certain strongholds illeagal to play? Wow, how about other cards, what is currently legal and what is not? Havn't played in two or three years at least. I believe I quit at the end of Hidden Emporer or something.
Hoo, would probably trade for some new stuff.

"Wasting Disease" is trés cool... the other Black Scrolls not so.
You missed the Gold Edition which was something like Jade (do you remember the terms "Jade legal" and "Open"?), only much more restrictiv and heavy changes to the Imperial Favor.
There is an upcoming Diamond Edition in October which let's you use many of the old cards, so wait a bit with trading.

Well, allright then thanks for the information. I'll actually have to organize them again. Maybe throw together the old Scorpion Dishonor Deck.

I love L5R. Only card game I will play now. That is, if I ever got a chance to play it. I run Dragon almost always. I get my ass kicked almost always. I still love it. DOn't like the quickly progressing storyline anymore though, it costs too much money.

Wow, I guess, I'll have to look over the rules and stuff. Go check out some websites. I used to enjoy the hell out of the game.

There's a PDF of the current rules on the official site -> http://www.legendofthefiverings.com/ccg/rules.html
You'll want to read the L5R CCG Rulebook and the Heaven & Earth rulesheet.
