Who on RPG plays MUDs?

I still play Mozat Mud, but am open to suggestions of others.

I play on a couple of MUSHes.

AmberMUSH, mostly.

Is this a "role call" or a "roll call"?

I used to be fairly active on ElfQuest MUSH, but I gave it up and stick to MUCKs exclusively.

I used to play the MUD Gemstone on AOL, way back when. Then I played Dragonrealms on AOL and after it moved away to be a separate, pay service; I was a fairly high-rank Moon Mage who also loved rapier fighting and carving.

Other than that, I've only played Medievia which is a huge but shallow hack-n-slash MUD. A lot of fun, but not nearly deep enough to hold my interest.

I mudded my way through college- not much else to do there besides drinking.

I started on Carrion Fields, tried BatMud, and ended up on DarkMists for most of the time.

It was not the same after college (a small group of us mudded together), but I am still waiting for a mmorpg that could match the rush gotten from a pk mud fight. heh.

I'm a compulsive MUX/MUSHer and I own one. No MUDs, though.

I play(ed) on Transformers and Wheel of Time (I bet forgiveness daily) MUSHes mostly, ran a couple, built another. my l337 PennMUSH h4xx0r skillz pwn j00! Someday, I'll figure out something productive to do with my wealth of completely useless mushcode information. :)

Jeez, tell me about it! If I could somehow get a career out of building and desc-ing I'd be so on it.

I've played, ran, and built MUSHes. Don Karnage and were playing on the same Transformers MUSH when we met at a convention. I learned how to code hacking PennMUSH, and I still maintain an interest in the medium. (But DEAR GOD MUSHes need a new, sane multimedia html-rendering client.) I played on Wheel of Time MUSHes for a few years (in an ultimately futile attempt to get *something* useful out of the time I wasted on Robert Jordan), including Tales of Ta'veren and Mirrors of the Wheel.

I BatMud'd a lot in college, played AmberMush a while, and now

I help run ChampionsMush. We need people! Or at least in a month, as we're re-booting

I *have* Mudded and enjoyed it, but never found a Mud that holds my attention indefinately.

Cthulhumud was the best and no-doubt I'll get back to it. It does need more roleplaying, and less hack-n'-slash, though.

Cybersphere was a fun cyberpunk mud, but there was too little for an unknown character to get up to and too many people wanting to screw with the newbie.

Oddly, if some of that hack-n'-slash were taken from Cthulhumud, where it really doesn't belong, and transferred to Cybersphere, where it could stave off boredom for those not involved in plots, it would benefit both games.

I haven't Mudded in a long time, though Lensmoor was fun.

I MUSH a lot, probably it's my primary form of rp'ing, since I have no gaming group atm. D&D 3rd ed stuff.

I used to play on the... Dragon's Gate MUD from Mythic Entertainment (they now do the Dark Age of Camelot MMORPG).

Never been a big MUDder, though I avidly play MUCKs.

I'm RedFox on FurryMUCK and Tapestries.

I also play Kiff on a roleplay-intensive SciFi furry MUCK called FurScape (http://www.furscape.com/).

I used to MUD like crazy around 1996-1999. I was a longtime participant on a MUD called <i>Sanity's Edge,</i> a cyberpunk LPMUD, as a character named Winternight.

It was heaps of fun, alas, but 'Edge is no more, to my knowledge. I spent a too-brief period learning how to code to help build the sequel, but that also fell through. Pity...

Cheers,

My roommate keeps trying to get me to play with him on Avendar, but I've resisted so far. It was kinda fun when I used to play, but the levelling... meh.

Does multiplayer NWN count?

Hmm, I'd say if it's not text-based, then it's not a real MU*. It's a MMORPG. (And NWN isn't technically a MMORPG, though it can/has persistent state world servers)

I play on three furry-themed MUCKs. Used to play on a fourth, but that one got too inflated with asshats.

I used to play on a Fallout MUD, but the excessively huge world was just a turnoff to me. I like my MUDs like Furcadia (sans the asshats).

I played CF too, then moved to Abandoned Realms, and when AR became too trashy I moved to Forsaken Lands where I still play and imm to this day. It is by far the most interesting mud I have ever tried. And I agree; no game ever gave me the adrenaline rush that a PK mud does. :D

Played on many muds and then wandered over to Abysmal Realms where I spent a couple years playing/building/Imm'ing.. then sort of wandered away.

May have to check muds out again.. I sort of miss em.

The MUD I played on most (and still do, on a once-a-month basis or so) is MUME, which stands for Multi-User Middle Earth.

It's a very PvP-oriented MUD. There's a war going on, you see, between the forces of the west and Sauron's minions.

Some things I like about MUME:
* very little available in the way of magic equipment.
* I got a pretty good understanding of the geography of middle earth from playing.
* Some of the descriptions are amazing... not that you have the time to enjoy some of them (due to the rapid-fire nature of the game).
* Alignment does matter for the good races.
* Trolls are crazy powerful, but suffer realdeath from the sun. (I've lost 25 levels-- a month or so of levelling up-- in two seconds. It breaks your heart, but it also feels SO right.)
* Did I mention the race war? Or rather wars, since some forces of evil battle others?

Anyhow, I play every now and again, but I don't play seriously anymore.

I know this thread is deceased, but I just wanted to mention that if any of you still play MUDs, CthulhuMUD has undergone a sort of revitalization. The world is about twice the size, by virtue of 100% original areas, based on the mythos and the sick and twisted minds of those doing the building. Tons of new features, etc, etc. Not so much trying to plug the game as I am trying to help those of you who might want to check out something new, or who might want to feed those old addictions once again. It's definitely worth a looksee, if you're into the mythos, MUDs, and haven't been around in a while. It's definitely something different, and might even be a refreshing change of pace. :)

I know you! You are Nyarlathotep on CthulhuMud!

I really should check out CthulhuMud again - I have never found another MUD that was anywhere near as good.

Can someone just roll up a new character and go explore some of these new areas, or would you need some levels under your belt first? I always enjoyed exploring your MUD but I don't much care for hacking and slashing.

Edit: Oh, and what are these new features of which you speak?

I don't MUD, but MUSHing's been a thing of mine for YEARS now. Fun stuff.

At the moment, I'm playing at three places- Transformers: 2005 (my first MUSH that I returned to a year or two ago- fun times!), Exalted MUSH (whose website I can't recall), and The Brave & The Bold (www.braveandthebold.net ), a super nifty DC based place.

I'm familiar with MUDs -- I played GemStone back when the Genie network was alive and kicking, and when the game was set within Rolemaster's Shadow World -- but what are MUSHes and MUCKs? What are the differences between the three?

Tumbleweed

The primary difference between a MUD and a MUSH (or a MUCK, or a MUX, really), is that MUSHes are geared more towards roleplay and player-driven stuff.

Basically, your typical MUSH (or MUX, or MUCK, or whatever) doesn't have any code for random 'mobs' you can beat up for XP. Granted, some MUSHes do have combat systems, but those are mainly so opposing characters can beat up on each other rather than on mobs of orcs. Make sense?

Yes, perfectly. :)

Is there a "master list," so to speak, that one can browse? Also, how do you connect with the games? Do each have their own client, like Gemstone has? I'm an a Mac, if that makes a difference.

Mudconnector.com has a pretty comprehensive list. My computer came with software that automatically activates and lets me play muds when I click on the links in mudconnector.com, but you can download better clients which should work for multiple muds.

Okay... I did play (briefly) an Exalted: The Dragon Blooded MUSH a while back. But that's not really the sort of thing that interests me at all.

What I am desperate to find out is: Does anybody know of an Exalted: The Fair Folk MUSH set in the Wyld? Because (as has often been observed) Waypoints are essentially 'Rooms' and Journeys are 'Exits,' plus the entire concept of Fair Folk interaction is through shaping combat - essentially, conflicts are roleplayed out. The whole thing is perfect for a MUSH, and I'd love to try it out.
