View Full Version : Clothing Line Character Design

So a former co worker of mine wants me to design a character for his new clothing line. The character will appear on every pair of jeans and shirt for the clothing line. The thing is, I've never done anything like this before, so I don't know how to charge him.
Is this done with a flat fee? Royalties off of every pair of jeans sold? A combonation of both? What kind of rights should I keep for the character?
Any info would be greatly appriciated.

I'd say both if you can get away with it.
But I have no idea.

You may want to pick up a copy of the pricing and ethical guidlines by the graphic arts guild. You can probably find a copy at your local half price books or online (see link below). It covers rates for things like this for local, regional, national and international campaigns as well as what to charge, protecting yourself, etc. Pricing is typcially based on usage as well as the company size (annual billings) It is a must have for anyone donig work in this field.

I hope this helps.

Gotta throw my hat into the ring with Bryan Wootan on this. See what the GAG says and work from there.

Now, there is a just reason to buy that GAG book? like all the income of the book serves for a good cause or something altruistic?
Im sincerely ignorant of why they dont make the pricing information free of charge, unless of course, the sales of such book are meant to fuel so giant machine of graphic artist love...
Just curious, really

Doesn't the sales of the book help to leverage the cost of legal fees an artist may rack up over things like copyright disputes that the GAG can help with?

The GAG book has more than just pricing. It covers how to sell certain types of design, how to bid design and the different stages or phases of the design process as well as some standards for covering your ass in the business world with the client. It is a pretty handy book for designers. IMHO anyway.

Paying for the GAG book pays for someone to collect all that information and put it in book form. It's not as if all graphic designers phone the fee they charged to some central office each time they finish a job. I believe they compile the data with questionaires of some kind, which someone has to process and compile. Lot of work required to make that book.
