View Full Version : Creating the perfect army (40k)

Ok, so here's the challenge: Say you can make and use a force made up of units from any legal army in the 40k universe using normal guidelines (other than being able to pick from different lists, of course. I.e. 1 manditory HQ, 2 manditory troops, same org chart, if a unit can only be purchased if you have a specific other unit, then you still need to get the other one first, all wargear is from a unit's home list, etc.), no fluff considerations (let's say the entire force are warp-constructs that don't really exist, so the fact that they're fighting side by side is a non-issue), what would you build? What units would you make your force out of, who would lead it, how would it work?

What's your perfect force?

What, so no-one has any ideas on making a combo army?

Not on that kinda level. And for a 'fun' force I'd want to go back to 2ed and start with all the daffy Ork artillery...

If I played 40k, I'd want to play 2nd edition Space Orks for all the goofy artillery. :D

Anyone have even a lose mix of units they think would work good together?

Besides, if you want weird artillery, some of the Eldar stuff is where you should be looking.

I want to have a catapult that fires clay pots full of killer bees on crystal meth. And a gun that shoots Snotlings through another dimension where time and space have no meaning so that they can materialize inside an Imperial tank and cling for dear life to the head of the poor schmuck doing the driving and thus cause the tank to crash into a fast food stand and burst into flame. :D

I was thinking the other day, about the fluff surrounding the Damocles Crusade and the Tau Human Auxilliaries.

It occured to me that in addition to the human aux, there could still be actually Space Marine troops left behind.

Then it occured to me that an army of Space Marines and Tau, joining forces for the Greater Good, could be really nasty.

Then I got to see it in combat the next day at the FLGS. They did some hurt. Oh did they do some hurt.

It was a team game. Space Marines/Tau vs. Space Marines/Eldar.

By the end, the only holdout was about 4 Eldar with icky Mind War powers, holding off the remainder of the force. I didn't see it to the end, but I have little doubt of the outcome.

So, what I would do, is continue the white & black Stormtrooper theme I have going with my Tau, and throw in some Space Marines, and just generally tear shit up.

I can think of all kinds of wanky combos, but would they be legal in the context of this question?

ie Genestealers taken as troops in a Land Raider Crusader taken as heavy support backed by an Eldar Farseer with Fortune?

A squad of Tau Broadside Battlesuits with a Farseer casting guide on them.

Necrons running with Tyranids would be nasty squared. A mix of immortals and warriors running behind a pile of termigaunts. A Lord with a warscythe and a tricked out Tyrant ganging up on any character in the game. Hell just a monolith could fill in most of the tyranid weaknesses.

Space marines with thier heavy choices filled out with IG tanks.

A Tau army with a Dark Eldar Archon and Incubi for bakc up.

The possibilities are endless.

Battlewagons, with every speed boost, full of blood angel lighting clawes terminators lead by a wolf priest (with their funky psy-smoke power) and a sanguary high priest.

Backed up by D-cannon batteries.

edit: a proven, highly effective combo is marines and IG.
The marines draw and absorb fire, leaving the IG free to do what they do best: wipe the xenos scum off the map.

Actually, that's exactly the kind of stuff I had in mind. Although the monolith only 'ports units with the Necron special rules (it won't even do Pariahs and the like, so it can't do 'nids).

Hmm... Farseer is probably top-choice for commander.

Personally, I'd fill a bunch of Dark Eldar raiders with the gaunts/stealers in a fast attack army. Cheap & plentiful.
