View Full Version : Dungeon Magazine Pieces
Issue #106 of Dungeon Magazine, which will be on the stands in December has been unveiled so I can finally show everyone...
Here's the cover piece drawn by me and colored by the incredible Roberto Campus (http://www.robertocampus.com)! :

Also, from Issue #105, a few depictions of some nasty fantasy diseases. These were a blast to do:

I've been really pushing the Udon (http://www.udoncomics.com) guys to showcase a greater variety in our work. Although we're well known for our anime style art (especially on White Wolf's Exalted RPG and the Street Fighter comic for Image), these types of pieces work well to show people that we're capable of all sorts of different subject matters and styles.
I thought you guys and gals would enjoy seeing these. Comments are most welcome.

These are great, Jim. I love the Portraits of the disease victims (especially the melty-face guy). Very slick.
I have to admit, I thought Udon was a strictly anime-style outfit. Not that there's anything wrong with that :). I'm just really impressed with this type of illustration.
Welcome aboard!

Awesome work! Say, did you team up with Roberto on all four of them or just the first one? Anyway I love the colors and the expressive nature of the portraits, color and shape really work well together on all of them!
cheers!

Wow, these are awesome! I really like the pic with the girl who has eyes on her back - for some reason that creeps me out the most. :-)
Like most, I tought UDON was stricly anime as well given the comic work I've seen them do as well as the RPG work. These pieces add a nice new niche for the studio to push in.
Keep up the great work.

All of them are good but the eyeball ridden spine is both well executed and a creepy composition. Great facial expression.
Thanks for the compliments!

Roberto and I teamed up on all of those ones. One of the advantages to having a group of artists working together is the ability to collaborate on pictures and give everyone a chance to try different things. Roberto loves digitally painting pictures, but generally finds coming up with the initial line work more tedious. Collaborating gives us a chance to play to our strengths. It also teaches me a lot about color and painting that I can utilize in my own work later on.
Here's a quick one from Dungeon #105. This pic is pencilled by Eric Vedder and colored by me:

Obviously, it's not as painterly as Roberto's work. Different approaches, different levels of experience.
With our crew of over 20 artists and lots of different styles amongst them, I've been making an effort to promote us to RPG companies that wouldn't normally have looked in our direction. I'm also letting companies know that we're available to take on more work.
Diversifying the portfolio means that we get to experiment more and keep very busy. Obviously, the anime/manga look is a big part of what we do, but it's not the only thing we do.
