View Full Version : to finally paint my bloody Necrons

I haven't painted anything in a long time. I need to get off my ass and start painting again. I have been lazy about it for too long.
I have a small force of Necrons that has been hanging around since the codex was released. They seem a good place to start. They aren't too complicated to paint and they will be good to get some practice on.
I am still deciding on a paint scheme. I don't want to do the same old metallics and inks paint job. I am thinking of using a more undead sort of paint scheme with white basecoat, brown ink and bleached bone drybrush. I am not sure what to do with the gun. Maybe black with bleached bone drybrushed over and boltgun metal for the blade at the end.
Some things might look better with the metallics though like the scarabs and the destroyer bodies. I'm not sure how that would look with the rest though especially destroyers with bleached bone torsos and metallic bodies.
Any thoughts or tips?

Damn, I suck at coming up with color schemes. The standard color scheme is just as dull as dishwater. I am running through all sort of unlikely color schemes like imperial purple and space wolves grey or shadow grey with gold. I even had bad moon yellow in my hand at one point.
Probably the simplest models to paint in the entire game and I can't figure out how I want to paint them. I suppose it's funny.

Dude, I have the same problem. I really don’t want to paint them in the standard metallic theme. For single models, it can look very nice (I’ll probably paint my Lord in gold and bronze), but for an entire army, it tends to make the models look dark and undefined. Either that, or you get a shiny, plastic looking army.
Maybe I just can’t paint metals properly, but I find metallic colours always look best in combination with a non-metallic colour. I’ve tested several colour schemes over the last few days, but the one that seems to work best for me is the red/silver one that’s in the codex. If you dull down the red a bit, the model comes out very menacing. All red would be terrible, but the silver makes for a very cool contrast.
Undead style white sounds like a nice idea, too. I’ve also seen examples on the net of necrons painted in white and snot green. That gives them more of a ‘Gundam Wing’ style, but add some shading and a wash and it does look rather good.
Hope this helps,
Nag.

My current thoughts
Base coat white.
Flesh wash and bleached bone drybrush on the boney looking parts.
Regal blue on selected armor plates like the one that go over the back of the shoulder or the one in the center of the chest.
Black with boltgun metal drybrush for the gun.
Regal blue for the plate on the upper surface of the destroyers with boltgun metal for the undercarriage.
Perhaps a few other touches like shadow grey on the destroyer face plates. Shining gold for the rune on the chest if I am feeling ambitious.
Possible changes
code grey instead of bleached bone
a lighter blue like enchanted blue instead of the regal blue or even turqouise.
edit
the white/flesh wash/bleached bone is how I am doing my Tomb Kings so that's where that comes from.:D

There's a whole heaping mess of high-res colour scheme examples here. Most of them very good.

Mostly they are the same color schemes as in the codex. The blue and gold destroyer on the last page is interesting. The Dark Angels destroyer works surprisingly well.

You know, from your description, it almost sounds like you're painting your Necrons as if they were Tomb Kings of Khemri.
Which isn't that bad of an idea.
Instead of the Regal Blue armor plates, use Hawk Turquoise.
Instead of Boltgun metal, use Brazen Brass or a gold on the weapons.
I dunno, it looks cool in my head :D Might not be so nifty once painted.

Well, I am painting them like Tomb Kings.
I considered using the gold but I am a bit worried that it will be a bit too much and overwhelm everyone else. That brazen brass color isn't joking either.
