Wonder what it'd be worth to find a professional (or aspiring amateur looking to build a portfolio) to help polish presentation and layout.
I know it's expensive to get a serious pro - but somewhere in the timeline there's gotta be room for someone with an eye for this sort of thing to give it a look-over and organize it.
Even if there are little glitches in the rules (hopefully nothing seriously egregious like stats for a totally different system, once editing's done), and a few omissions (some ship stats, though hopefully nothing that's advertised on the back of the book), the MAJOR criticism of C.W.'s review - the difficulty reading the book - is really what would benefit from a professional's eye.
Folks like Universal Head --
http://www.universalhead.com/ -- the guy who does the breathtakingly useful board game rule sheets at "Headless Hollow" -- have a genuine love of gaming and genuine ideas for how to make it work. I know there's not a ton of compensation to be had in this field, but getting someone on board who knows how to make the inside of the book accessible and appealing is just about the only way to make sure Mongoose moves forward where reputation for RPG books are concerned.
