Re: [RPG]: A Song of Ice and Fire Roleplaying, reviewed by malladin_ben (2/5)
Hmm, can't help but think the House design system may be borrowing heavily from Reign's company creation.
I dunno about Ice and Fire. I've not played or read the RPG or the novels, so I only have this review and loose rumour to go on, but like the reviewer I'm none too enthused about it. I don't mind a no-stats system, but I do like a game to have some kind of bells and whistles to it. It's what's turned me off the whole Margaret Weiss canon - they're just a bog-standard system with famous franchises attached to make it more saleable.
I can't say that so far, Ice & Fire doesn't give me the same impression; that a mediocre game is relying on a major license to carry it. Can anyone give an example of a truly innovative mechanic that gives Ice & Fire an edge over the countless other Fantasy games? I've been looking for a good Fantasy RPG for years and so far all have either proven too complex or too stereotyped.
P.S. Capnzapp, GR may have had a hand in designing the new edition of WFRP, but that borrows heavily from the old version. I personally don't think of it so much as a redesign as a minor overhaul to a classic system. Doesn't make it a bad game, but I do think it detracts *slightly* from the prestige attached to having designed it. Dunno how the OP thinks of it.
