Let's say they have the same strength bonus, because it'd be unfair to assume that the fighter would be stronger than the wizard. Let's also assume that the wizard is proficient in the longsword. Fighters would still get +1 to hit above and beyond the wizard because of their Fighter Weapon Talent ability.

To break down how this would be different for 1st level characters, it would be something like:
Fighter, let's assume a moderate Strength of 16. Automatically proficient with longswords. Assuming that they've taken the 1-weapon Fighter Weapon Talent, the fighter would have a +3 (Strength), +3 (proficiency), +1 (1-weapon fighting) for a total of +7.
The wizard would
maybe have a Strength of 12, if we're generous. That's all. Total, +1, versus +7. Or, as you say, Shawn, if the wizard was equally strong (16), then +3 versus +7.
edit: the wizard could spend a feat to gain proficiency in longsword, and would then get the longsword proficiency of +3.
