Re: [RPG]: HackMaster Basic, reviewed by James Gillen (4/3)

Generally this was a good review in that it covers the material, but I just can't let a few of the misleading comments go unrebutted:

"and I'm not sure how much market there is for yet another fantasy game with poor editing, arbitrary choices and imbalanced rules. "

Please point out an example of a rule that's imbalanced. Also, how are choices arbitrary? Do you mean because you roll dice to determine your character's height or quirks? Historically, people attribute such things as level caps when discussing old school arbitrary. This game has none of that.

As an aside, luckily for us, there appears to be a very good market...Aces and Eights sold out its first run almost immediately, and it had our signature old school design far more than HMb....and HMb sales are throuigh the roof, so it's all good. Not sure it's a fact that D&D evolved to meet market demands -- quite possibly it evolved to suit the desires of its writers which may or may not coincide with the "market".
