Re: [RPG]: HackMaster Basic, reviewed by James Gillen (4/3)

I have a question, and this is a serious one not intended to be sarcastic or snarky

How can you review a game without playing it?

to me that is sort of like saying. "I did my research and the BMW is a nice car with many options but a high price tag and I prefer the lexus, even though I haven't driven either."

Having driven a BMW I can say it is unlike any other car out there and cannot explain the differences other than to say it doesn't drive like a ford.

So how can you read a set of rules and come to any form of solid conclusion without seeing them in pay?

I have played countless games that i thought had stupid rules until I actually played the game and saw how they made sense in the grand scheme of things.

I find it funny you can come to any conclusion (be it good or bad) about any role-playing game, particularly the mechanics of them, without some sort of actual game play.

I should point out, I have been meaning to ask this question of all reviewers for some time. It just happened to pop up in a thread about HMB and has nothing to do with the reviewers opinions on the game or the review itself, I just cannot understand reviewing a game without playing it
