Re: [RPG]: Dungeons & Dragons 4th Edition Core Rulebook Gift Set, reviewed by Venger

Honestly, given how many reviews of 4e there are out there, I liked the change in tone of this one. If it were the only 4e review available, I could understand the bitching about it, but there are easily 10 other reviews of 4e that do exactly what most people want and expect. I don't need to see that all repeated in every review.

It didn't match my experiences with it, but I haven't played 4e that much, so maybe at some point I'll find myself thinking the same thing. In fact, a couple people commented that their experiences were the same.

Something I have to think though, is that the reviewer only used the 3 core books. I'm sure WotC wanted to set the game up so people buy additional supplements and modules. I read through H1 that they provide as a free download, and I liked what it had to offer in terms of making adventures interesting. I also played in a game following a Dark Sun adventure, and I found it to be quite fun. I think it's possible that with the way 4e is set up now, that following some published adventures - provided for free on the Wizards site and in some of the Dungeon archives might give a feel of how to run 4e with more longevity.

Can anyone whose experiences matched the review comment on whether they only used the core books?
