Perhaps they didn't want to make the names sound dead serious? The original Fiend Folio had some strange names in it, so they just stayed in the tradition. Otherwise they could have named it Monster Manual III, I guess.

Also, not every D&D campaign is totally serious. Comic relief with some strange creatures is not all that bad. But you are right, without a small warning about the strangeness some serious GMs may have wasted some of their money in expectation of something else.
