I've noticed that all the WOTC hard-bound books that I've bought since "Savage Species" (and including that book) have had very odd binding. SS in particular has covers that won't close all the way. While the three books I have (SS, Arms & Equipment, and FF) are all good purchases that I don't regret, the binding thing makes me apologize when friends check out my copy of SS.
As for the "Tome of Horrors" vs. FF, I'd have to say that FF is the better product. ToH was highly nostalgic for someone that still has his ORIGINAL FF (in near-mind condition, I might add) and who always thought that the al-mi'raj would be a cool familiar for a sorcerer. Looking at the modern FF, it's a shame that WotC decided to pick several of the monsters that I really didn't like (the much-reviled disenchanter among them) from the original FF for this update. ToH does have the benefits of quantity and OGL, but the artwork is not as well-done on average and many of the creatures have just been given rehauls with little or no expanding or revision. They're both solid products overall, though. Just depends on how many third party books you like to have, I guess.
