Converted from Phorums BB System
The great thing about having more hps, is that as GM, you can make the players suffer longer.
RPGnetters are looking at D20 CoC HPs the wrong way. It's not, "Oh, I can survive getting shot by a cultist with a 9 mm". It, "a crackling beam of eltrich heat engulfs you. Your clothes catch fire and the superheated air burns your lungs...Ok, time to start round 2". A simple bullet to the chest and the investigator falling over is letting the players off much too easily.
One of the best things about CoC is the slowly dwindling sanity of the hero. There's no reason why the health of the hero cannot be similarily compromised. The character gets battered and beaten and broken. I know people are going to point out that D20 rules lack any sort of critical wounds table, death spiral mechnaics, etc. But that's really not necessary to describe how that walking corpse creature tears a strip of flesh off your arm after shrugging off your shotgun blast.
