I ran Day of the Beast with d20.

We started at 1st level and the characters made it to 6th.

It became clear by 2nd level that if they didn't keep their experience from past characters, they'd never make it beyond that point.

We lost one character to insanity and five or so to death. (It may have only been four). Poor Ray controlled the one character who went nuts and then either lost one or two more to death.

One of the characters Ray lost was a 6th level military type guy. It was near the end of the adventure. It was the first shot of the fight. He got hit for 10 points. He failed his Save and died. Boom. Dead.

Ray is part of my second group. I'm doing show and tell right now, showing them games they might be interested in playing. He was quite adamant during my spiel about CoC that d20 was just as deadly as BRP.
