Converted from Phorums BB System

Yup, yup, yup. Never have I worried about Great Cthulhu survivng shotgun blasts - in either system. The true threat to a CoC character, if playing a strictly Lovcraftian campaign, is to his mind and not his body. In nearly 20 years of gaming, I've see many more characters go insane than die. In fact, the only deaths I've had in my games were in the d20 version!

I've always justified escalating hit points in the d20 version by a character becoming more aware of danger and his own mortality as he gains experience. This awareness leads him to better protect himself.

Also, if I want to play a more action-oriented campaign, I'm glad that the d20 version gives me the built-in options for it, like escalating hit points and combat feats. Either way, though, the end result can be the same for an investigator - retirement or insanity.

Regardless of mechanics, though, it bears repeating that the d20 version of Cthulhu rocks not because of its rules, but because of its story-based handling of the mythos.

Later,
Matt
