One of the biggest problems that I ran across with Earthdawn was the "cookie cutter" approach to the Circles -- every character of the same circle has exactly the same powers, thus leading to characters who, much like old school D&D, are exactly the same except for equipment and playing styles.
This being said, I loved the world of Earthdawn; I think the setting is great both for its true encouragement of non-combat, non-adventure skills (which is sadly rare) and the depth of thought that went into the non-human races.
