Actually the book does very clearly state that the game is not to get obsessed with money. If your GM does then money will be of interest to you all, but maybe he's either not got the epic feel or you are all dwarfs?

I think knowing the rough value of a coin is fun, it adds veracity to the setting, but should then be ignored.

I do think that the author made that very clear. Isn't 1d6 silver quite a lot!
