Not a historian, but...

I'd imagine the benefit of fighting naked would be the "we're scary bastards who are going to @!#$ you up" factor.

Imagine you're part of a well furnished and diciplined army and the guys who you are supposed to walk all over come charging at you like mad men. They're screaming like they're going to rip you limb from limb and the crazy SOBs aren't wearing any armor! They're not even wearing any clothes!

I imagine that'd be intimidating at least the first time you saw it.
