Yeah, I'm going to assume that the chicken is the standard reference in the same way that the cost of anything in the U.S. can be assessed as a certain number of pennies. Having read a fair amount of Morgan Llewellyn books (Finn Mac Cool and Red Branch and such), I get the idea that ancient Celts, and especially pre-historic mythical proto-Celts, didn't carry around money. Instead, if something needed to be acquired, the heroes would either stage a daring raid on their rivals, or they'd trade. Trade livestock if you've got it, or something else - and the "chicken standard" lets the players & DM make sure the trade is fair.

I've got to say, I'm intrigued by this game. I've got a particular love of savage/tribal type fantasy games. And i'm a little familiar with the Slaine comics, so maybe this will appeal more to me than to the average gamer.
