As I noted in another thread (just in case you don't happen to look in on it), I have often found that archaic writers use the term "naked" to describe people who are, in fact, clothed, though they might be wearing nothing more than some sort of undergarment. I will note specifically the American Indians, who were often described as "naked," when in fact they sported a variety of clothing styles, and the Tales of the Arabian Nights, in which one early Victorian translator devoted a lengthy footnote to explain that the supposedly-naked protagonist of one yarn was in fact wearing his under-robe.
So maybe the famous naked Celtic warriors were in fact shirtless Celtic warriors.
Maybe not.
