well, in the slaine comic, The Horned God Pt. 1, they pay the dwarf-scribe with iron bars. there's also a little section on the same page explaining it's a form of currency. but that's a good point about the hospitality bit.
regarding the whole idea of divergence from celtic history, decide if it actually bugs you first. it doesn't bug me, and i honestly find (this bit makes a lot of sense) slaine to be more entertaining than reading about the ancient celts.
it is, after all, sposta be entertainment. heh.
