Geeze, gamers will even buy art books of art consisting of art they already have in their books. Let's not forget the famous "Cuthulu for President" stuff. In my experience gamers used page/cost ratio when they need an excuse not to buy. And then turn right around and buy something that is clear not such a "bargin."
I agree that SW could have been a little thicker, but I think those who say they didn't get it for that reason where looking for an excuse.
As far as small company vs. big company goes, any small company trying the Trinity softcover stunt would have collapsed because the book was sold at a loss in desperation to revive the series. (which still baffles me, it was a great game.)
