I'm pleased that you label it correctly as a "pet peeve". It not being one of mine its inclusion or absence is completely meaningless to me.
Herbalism has whatever effect you need it to have at the time, make a roll with enough successes, good things happen. I don't see where anything more is needed than that...and if you want some herbal babel to make it sound good you can get some New Age Wholistic Herbal remidy book at Borders for like $5.
Traps...personally I hate 'em. They're silly. Snares to catch game, yes...traps to injure people...silly (anything more involved than a deadfall anyway).
I never use the things and couldn't care less whether they're there or not.
