The fact that you can play the game entirely with the core book is an indication of its strengths. The supplements are added extras-- you don't need them to play the game. They don't add anything vital or required. Just a lot of cool extras.

In my own Buffy game, we just used the core book, despite owning the Slayer's Handbook and Monster Smackdown. The latter two were useful to have for ideas and more quotes, and a few extra system thingies.
