I think the specific complaint was not that the writers had not read the obscure starwars novel but that they obviously had read the obscure starwars novel and that if they were going to so obviously steal concepts from it they should at least change the name.

The rebutal to which is that this is the ever so slight, and many times meaningless, difference between theft and tribute.
