I've heard this counterpoint used often, but really think it doesn't carry much weight. GP is supposed to be defined by level, and the proportion of XP you can sink into magic items is therefore limited by GP. That being the case, you might see the party wizard one level off instead of the whole party several levels off.

Got no argument there. By way of comparison, xp-exchange is the lesser of two evils.
