Toothless mooks

Converted from Phorums BB System
It seems that the sole purpose of mooks (or other minor obstacles using the same rules) is to die - that they have essentially no way of fighting back. Fair enough, but if the only uncertainty lies in how many die rolls it will take to clear them (the obstacle) away, with no possible detrimental effects to the players or the story, doesn't that take a lot of excitement out of the scene?
