Something I wanted to try in SAS was to use the Unknown Superhuman Powers attribute to replace advancement/experience.

How this works is that for each 10 points in USP you get out 15 points of powers, but they're generated by the GM and discovered as play proceeds.

So you have the choice of spending all your points normally, making your character exactly how you want but static, or investing points in USP, and having a character who'll start out weaker but develop into something more powerful as both the character and the player discover new powers.
