I haven't read the book, but according to the show, the glove was supposed to be a very powerful artifact that grafted itself to the user's arm, so the only way to remove it would be to kill or dismember the wearer. The only power it ever displayed was shooting lightning, but that's not to say that they beefed it up for the book.
