Converted from Phorums BB System
Hear, hear. Just because a game lacks one aspect, that is no reason to chuck the baby out with the bath water. After all, it really isn't that hard to come up with stats, even without the Timelord Companion. For the first few campaigns I ran, my players and I used the 'This is how I see my Character'/'This is how your description translates into stats' method of chargen. Very liberating and an emphasis on Role and not Roll.
I mean, if one disagreeable mechanic was all it took to keep you from playing an RPG, I dare say there would very few RPG players in the entire world. I know of no system that isn't tweaked by its players at least a little bit and almost every game comes with the proviso 'Change the rules to suit you.' And If the game works so well at capturing the feel of its genre so well that it doesn't require more than one or two tweaks, then by most standards you have a pretty great game on your hands.
My review states that Timelord is such a game, because despite one or two oddities (from a standard RPG point of view) it brilliantly captures the feel of the series and is even good for other series. Even some of you have agreed that skills like Bench-Thumping and Screaming are brilliant ideas. For those of you that haven't played the game because of the lack of a Chargen system, I really think you should have a go with it just once, and you'll see what I mean. It's a fast playing, thematically sound and highly entertaining gem of a game...
